Northern Virginia Kappa Achievement Foundation Academic Scholarship

Application:

DESCRIPTION

The Northern Virginia Kappa Achievement Foundation Scholarship is based on a student’s academic achievement and participation in school/community organizations and activities. Applicants must have a minimum of 3.0 grade point average. They must write a 500-word essay on a topic (listed on the application) to submit with their scholarship application. The application process also requires three letters of recommendation, transcripts, and in some cases, an interview. The scholarship is $1500.00. The scholarship committee selects a recipient based on their academic achievement, character, and leadership. Enclosed is a copy of the Scholarship Application and a description of the scholarship to be posted in your school. Deadline to submit application is Friday, April 14, 2017.

GUIDELINES

1. Scholarship awards are open to graduating seniors in all public and private high schools in the Loudoun County, Virginia geographical area who meet criteria prescribed in items below, or active members of the Dulles-Leesburg Chapter of the Kappa League for two years.

2. The Scholarship Selection Committee will select scholarship recipients after all candidates have been screened. The Northern Virginia Kappa Achievement Foundation, Inc Board of Directors will approve their selection.

3. Candidates for scholarship awards must meet the following criteria:

a. Have a high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale

b. Be a graduating senior of a public or private high school in Loudoun County, Virginia

c. Be an African American male of high moral character

d. Be involved in school and community activities (e.g., student government, honor society, sports, clubs, church, volunteer work, etc.)

e. Submit three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a school administrator or faculty member. (e.g., school, community, social, and personal reference)

f. Be accepted to an accredited four-year institution of high learning for the next school year. Scholarships shall be limited to the students attending “educational institutions” as defined in the United States Tax Code

g. Submit an official high school transcript

4. Any relatives of members of the selection committee, or its officers, directors, or substantial contributors are not eligible for this award.

5. Scholarships may be renewable for up to a total of four years. Scholarship recipients must meet the following criteria to be considered for renewal:

a. Be a full time student at an accredited four-year institution of higher learning during the prior years.

b. Have a college GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.

c. Submit an official college transcript.

6. Disbursements will be made to the student upon notification of enrollment in a qualifying college or university. If the student withdraws from school or is found to have misused the funds, the scholarship will be terminated.

All scholarship monies must be claimed within 12 calendar months of the date of being awarded or the award will be withdrawn.
