Renewing Neighborhoods. Strengthening Families.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark has been dedicated to providing affordable homes to qualified partner families for 30 years.

Locally, our vision is to build stronger communities in Essex, Union, and Hudson Counties where all residents live in safe, decent, affordable homes.

We currently have 1 single-family home in the city of orange, and are seeking a qualifying family to become a first-time homeowner through our program.

To Qualify:

√Demonstrating the Need

» Based on income no higher than 80% ami

(depending on family size)

» Home must be currently in substandard living conditions

√ Demonstrating Ability to Pay

» Monthly total debt including housing payments cannot exceed 40%

» Consistent payment history

» Must be able to meet the closing costs

√ Willingness to Partner with Habitat

» Submit complete application w/ necessary documentation

» Pay $50 - $100 Application Fee

» Commitment to fulfill Sweat Equity Hours

How to Apply:

Step 1: attend an orientation

Step 2: pay application processing fee

Step 3: complete an application and submit all documents

Step 4: get approved through family services committee and pass a home visit

Step 5: complete sweat equity* hours (min. 200 hours per family)

Step 6: close on your habitat home!

*What is Sweat Equity? the number of hours a partner family spends helping build your habitat home or the home of other partner family’s, and/or participating in required workshops, trainings, meetings, and other outreach activity. There is a minimum of 200 sweat equity hours per family that must be completed.

√ 3 Years of Tax Returns

√ 4 Recent Consecutive Pay Stubs

Proof of Ability to Pay

√ Credit Check

√ Copies of Current Utility Bills

√ 3 Consecutive Months Bank Statements

Proof of Willingness to Partner

√ Completed Application, Including

All Required Documents

√ Application Fee ($50 for credit/background checks)

√ Commitment to Complete Sweat Equity Hours (min. 200 hrs per family)
