INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SONG PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to teach students the parts of speech.

1.  The student must bring in the complete words to a song. There must be at least 20 lines to the song.

2.  The song must be appropriate for school (no inappropriate language or subject matter.)

3.  The final project must be done on Oak Tag or other large poster paper.

4.  There must be at least one picture of the artist on the poster.

5.  The title of the song and artist’s name must be on the poster in LARGE PRINT.

6.  Before the students make the poster, they should have the lyrics written in their notebook or printed out. Using a pencil, they should identify all of the parts of speech. For example: O say can you see by the dawn’s

interjection verb verb pronoun verb preposition article noun

early light, what so proudly we hailed at the…….

adjective noun pronoun adverb adverb pronoun verb preposition article

**** Some Contractions like: I’ve (I have) or you’ll (you will) or they’d (they would) will have the beginning part of the word a PRONOUN (I, me, he, she, it, we, they, etc.) and the end part of the word a VERB. ****

7.  After they have all of the parts of speech figured out, write the lyrics on the poster in pencil. Then, using your KEY, color code the letters in each word for the correct part of speech.

8.  How the KEY works: Color all of the nouns in the song Blue. Color all of the verbs Red. Color all of the adjectives Green. Color all of the adverbs Orange. Color all of the prepositions Purple. Color all of the pronouns Brown. Color all of the conjunctions Pink. Color all of the articles (a, an, the) Black. Color all of the interjections Yellow.

9.  The Key must be displayed on the poster.

10.  The grade for the project will be based mostly on accuracy (80%). 10% will be for neatness and effort. 10% will be for creativity and artistic expression.

11.  The student will have TWO weeks to complete the project. It will take a good amount of time and effort. It will be necessary to use a Dictionary.

12.  If the student is unable to use a song; a poem or lines from another work of literature may be substituted. All of the other instructions apply.

13.  Several examples of excellent projects will have been shown to the students. There has also been at least one lesson demonstrating how to do the project. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

Mr. Solino
