  • be an enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student for the 2008-2009 academic year
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Two Essays / Essay 1: Please answer the following question, limiting your answer to a maximum of one page:
  • Please share how you, as a Tutoring Program Supervisor, will ensure the creation of a welcoming and inclusive Tutoring Program. Discuss any skills, experiences, or interests that would enable you to make a distinctive contribution to the Tutoring Program.
Essay 2: Choose one of the following, limiting your answer to a maximum of one page:
  • Describe an issue on which you have taken a stand. Why was this important to you?
  • What, in your opinion, do you think are the skills and values of a good leader? Which do you already possess and which do you hope to develop?
  • Describe a time when you found yourself in a situation outside of your “comfort zone”. What did you learn about yourself through this? What did you learn about others?
  • Describe an experience that demonstrates the challenges and possibilities of diversity in an educational or community setting. How would you use your position to address these?

Evaluation guidelines

The resume and essays provide the selection committee with important insight into your qualifications for the Tutoring Program Supervisor position. Your overall application will be scored according to the following criteria, so be sure to highlight these areas in your application.

  1. Leadership and Supervisory Skills: planning and delegation, the ability to facilitate group discussions, teambuilding, assertiveness, taking initiative, and ability to teach and train others
  1. Administrative and Organizational Skills: time management, experience planning and implementing activities and programming, ability to balance multiple tasks

Thurs, November 29 / Applications are due on the ground floor of the Residential and Student Services building (RSSB), located on 2610 Channing Way, by 5:00pm.
Mon, December 10 / All candidates will be notified of their Interview via email.
Jan.16 – Jan. 29
(Wed-Tues) / Individual interviews are held. You will be notified about your interview time by your Supervising APC via phone and/or email.
Tues. February5 / Final Notification letters are available on the ground floor of the RSSB from 9:00am-5:00pm.
Wed. February 6 / Hard copies of the Accept/Decline letters must be turned in to the ground floor of the RSSB by 5:00pm.
Wed. February 20 / Spring Internship begins.

the interview

Successful applicants will be invited to an individual interview with members of the Academic Services staff. Please note that interest in this position tends to be high and that we receive many qualified applications. We only have the resources to interview a limited number of candidates for all available positions. If you are a current or former employee of Academic Services you do not have to turn in your past evaluations with the application packet, however they may be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Fall training and Spring internship

Candidates selected for the Tutoring Program Supervisor position are required to participate in a paid internship of up to 30 hours during the spring semester. The Spring Internship is an essential part of preparation to undertake the duties of the position.

The internship begins on February 20, 2008and continues through the end of the semester. It will include the following

  1. Training sessions with the Academic Program Coordinators and other Student Supervisors to prepare you for your position with the Academic Services Centers
  2. Participation in the hiring and training of new AcademicServicesCenter student staff (see dates below)
  3. Meetings with your new staff to begin planning for fall semester opening and Welcome Week

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Academic Services Tutoring Program Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and administration of tutoring activities for a subject (Chemistry, Math, Physics, or Writing). Working directly with and supervised by the Academic Program Coordinator, the Tutoring Program Supervisor plays a key role in the selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of all staff tutors, as well as ongoing assessment of the tutoring program.

  • Required: Previous leadership or supervisory experience; demonstrated success with administrative, management and organizational skills; tutoring or teaching experience; ability to communicate effectively; dependability;attention to detail; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; currently registered UC Berkeley graduate or undergraduate student.
  • Preferred: Program coordination experience; selection experience; meeting facilitation experience; ability to facilitate cooperative peer relationships; ability to work sensitively with students; teamwork oriented

terms of employment

  • The period of employment for this position commences the week of February 20, 2008 and continues through the end of the 2008-2009 Academic Year.
  • The Academic Center Tutoring Program Supervisor is paid a wage of $14.50 per hour and the position is classified as an Assistant III.
  • The Academic Center Tutoring Program Supervisor must be a currently enrolled UC Berkeley student.
  • Supervisors are required to complete a paid internship of up to 30 hours during the Spring 2008 semester. The internship period begins February 20, 2008 and continues through the end of the Spring 2008 semester.
  • Tutoring Program Supervisors must be available to work all day from August 4-19, 2008 to receive additional paid training; to facilitate Tutor Orientation and/or Training; and to prepare the tutoring staff and AcademicCenter for fall opening.
  • Tutoring Program Supervisors are scheduled to work up to 40 hours during Welcome Week August 20-24, 2008. Availability all day on Opening Days, August 18 and 19, is mandatory. Duties include, but are not limited to, coordinating the tutor Welcome Week program schedule, assisting with AcademicCenter orientations and open houses, and publicizing the tutoring program.
  • During the Academic Year, the Tutoring Program Supervisor work schedule will vary from week to week. Tutoring Program Supervisors may report no more than 10 hours per week. Within this time, the Tutoring Program Supervisor is expected to work as many hours as necessary to administer the tutoring program effectively. The Tutoring Program Supervisor work schedule is determined in consultation with the Academic Program Coordinator
  • The TPS attends the following meetings:
  1. Meetings with the APC twice per month
  2. Weekly tutor staff meetings on Wednesdays from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.
  3. Monthly Supervisor meetings on Wednesdays from 7:30pm – 9:30pm.
  • Supervisors are accountable to and supervised by an Academic Program Coordinator.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by the APC.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Each Tutoring Program Supervisor is responsible for supervising the tutoring program for a specific subject, evaluating the effectiveness of that program, and coordinating the development of one subject group (expected hours: 10 hrs/week).

  • Recruit and hire staff tutors during the spring semester for the following academic year
  • Assist with staff orientation and/or training prior to the opening of the residence halls (both spring and summer), and throughout the academic year as needed
  • Meet with all TPSs and the supervising APC twice per month. Attend AcademicCenter student supervisor meeting once per month on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30pm
  • Share responsibility for leading joint-staff meetings on alternating Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm

  • Assist with the planning, scheduling, marketing, and implementation of tutors’ study sessions
  • Assist with the planning, scheduling, marketing, and implementation of tutors’ Welcome Week programs, review sessions, and other programs
  • Lead subject tutor meetings on alternating Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm
  • Hold tutors accountable for fulfillment of their duties as outlined in the tutor job description
  • Collect and provide student and TPS feedback on tutor performance, and hold evaluation meetings with tutors at the end of each semester
  • Be responsible for tutor timesheets and tutor login sheets
  • Meet with Tutoring Program APC twice per month
  • Maintain subject email list
  • Survey and evaluate the tutoring program and prepare end of semester and end of year reports for subject and unit, including statistics, student feedback, and suggestions for future development
  • Modify tutoring program as needed and as approved by the Tutoring Program APC
  • Maintain working knowledge of the AcademicCenter and the tutoring program at a specific unit
  • Ensure the highest possible visibility of the tutoring program at all units
  • Provide opportunities for other training/development for subject group
  • Compile and maintain tutor resources
