WBAP Energy Show
Tune in on Saturdays to WBAP 820 AM from 12:20-1:00 to hear The Energy Show, a program dedicated to decreasing energy costs & creating a more energy efficient household. Don Ferrier, president of Ferrier Custom Homes, hosts the show every other Saturday, withhis nexthosting dateslated for July 21st.
Everyday Sustainability
We are big fans of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s), but just like paint, batteries, thermostats, and other hazardous household items, CFLs should be disposed of properly as a result of the mercury that is housed in their glass tubing. Do not throw CFL’s away in your household garbage if better disposal options exist. Check out or or call 1-800-435-4448 to find disposal options in your area by using your zip code. Another option is to check directly with your local waste management agency for recycling options and disposal guidelines in your community. Finally, IKEA stores take back used CFL’s, and other retailers are currently exploring take back programs.

Heather’s Home Grabs SIPA Building Excellence AwardsIn May Heather’s Home was honored with two awards from the Structural Insulated Panel Association: Best Home under 3,000 square feet & Best Overall Winner. The Building Excellence Awards recognize SIPA members that build innovative and energy efficient buildings using structural insulated panels (SIP’s). To be eligible, all entries must use SIP’s for at least 50% of the building envelope. Entries were evaluated on energy efficiency, design and structural engineering innovation, and other SIP-related factors that contributed to the success of the project.
Realtor Tours: A Success! Realtors Tour Heather's HomeOn May 1st & June 8th Ferrier Custom Homes hosted two realtors’ events at Heather’s Home which proved to be very successful education tools. We would like to send out a big “thank you” to Mel Harris & Sherry Matina with the Greater Fort Worth Association of REALTORS®, who were such great support in providing these valuable learning opportunities on sustainability. We heard many testimonies from realtors saying how helpful these hands-on experiences were, and how interested they are about incorporating those same green concepts into their projects.
Energy Bill ComparisonStandard New Home VS High Performance Home
You may remember reading in our last newsletter about Pat & Linda Vaught moving into their new home. We thought we would give you an update as to how extremely well their home has performed during these last few months compared to their previous rental home built in 2003 using minimum energy efficiency standards.
2006 Rental Home (1,400sf)
March 2006: 1277 kwh was $182.35
April 2006: 959 kwh was $140.55
2007 New Home (3,000sf)
March 2007: 928 kwh was $114.40
April 2007: 875 kwh was $108.54
As you can see, although the Vaughts doubled the size of their home, their energy bills did not increase accordingly. They continue to report extremely low energy bills on a monthly basis and are so glad they made the decision to invest into their very own High Performance Home.
