2.  acquire a vocabulary appropriate for performing certain tasks in Spanish, such as asking or inviting someone to do something, responding to an invitation, expressing a judgment about something, expressing agreement or disagreement, indicating personal preference, asking someone’s opinion, proposing to do something, accepting or rejecting a suggestion. (GE criteria 1,2,3,6,9)

Requistos del curso:

1.  Participación: You will be expected to actively participate in class activities by (1) preparing all assignments thoroughly BEFORE coming to class;

(2) arriving to all classes with textbook and other necessary materials (Do not plan

to share a textbook or class materials with classmates—you must have your own!)

(3) remaining alert and paying attention fully to your instructor and classmates

during each class, contributing to class discussions and responding to questions,

both when called upon and voluntarily; (4)demonstrating a receptive attitude and

willingly participating in partner, small group, and class activities, whether oral or

written. Please note that in order to achieve success in any college level course, a

student should expect to spend significant study time outside of class. This is

essential.

**PLEASE NOTE THAT AT THE 202 LEVEL, YOU ARE EXPECTED

TO HAVE MASTERED THE MATERIAL FROM PREVIOUS LEVELS.

2. ACTIVITY SECTION:

WORKBOOK AND LAB BOOK: All workbook and lab book assignments will be done on-line using the QUIA system. Each student will have a QUIA password with instructions as to how to enter the system, how to send work to the professor, etc. The QUIA system will electronically grade your exercises and give you feedback on them.

*Please note that the QUIA exercises are designated as pledged, individual work and fall under the Honor Code system.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: Although we will not have time to do all the exercises in the textbook, you may need to do extra exercises for more practice and better comprehension. Certain exercises will be assigned for homework. We will go over some of this assigned homework in class, but you should include all assigned written homework (both the activities corrected in class and un-corrected assignments) in your packet.

AUDIO CD: The audio CD you received with your textbook contains listening activities coordinated with marked textbook sections, including lists of vocabulary words pronounced by native speakers. You may be assigned certain parts of this CD for homework, and you should do other parts of it for additional practice at improving your listening skills.

SATELLITE BROADCASTS, MOVIES, etc. The language lab receives Spanish language broadcasts from various Hispanic countries. Students may view news programs, soap operas, comedies, documentaries, sports, etc. This is an excellent way to practice hearing the language, as well as viewing authentic Hispanic culture situations. You may be assigned specific channels or programs or told to simply view any program of interest to you and to hand in a paragraph about what you saw. REMEMBER THAT THE ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SPANISH LISTENING SKILLS IS TO PRACTICE—this is an enjoyable and effective way to do so.

2.  PRUEBAS: These are short unannounced quizzes. They may check your comprehension of material already covered or check to see if you are prepared for the current day’s lesson. YOU MAY NOT MAKE UP AN UNANNOUNCED QUIZ, EVEN IF YOUR ABSENCE IS EXCUSED, because obviously the quiz would not then be a surprise. At least one quiz grade will be dropped from your final average.

3.  ENSAYOS: You will write two or three two-page essays on assigned topics. You will be graded on the organization and presentation of your ideas as well as on your use of proper grammar.

4.  EXÁMENES PARCIALES Y EXAMEN FINAL: The chapter tests and final exam will be comprehensive evaluations of the material covered, including vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. You will be tested frequently in class on speaking skills. The best way to prepare for exams is by doing assignments, computer and lab exercises day by day instead of waiting until the night before a test.

5.  ACTIVIDADES CULTURALES: You will be required to attend a minimum of three cultural activities during the semester and to turn in a typed written description afterward . A list of accepted activities, as well as detailed instructions on how to document your attendance will be available on the Modern Languages Website. You should check this site often for important information concerning various aspects of your course—tutoring, lab hours, hints for learning a language, etc.

NOTAS: Participación 15% Pruebas 10%

Activity Section 10% Ensayos 10 %

Exámenes parciales 30% Actividades

Examen final 20% culturales 5%

Asistencia (Attendance): Regular attendance and punctuality are required. As per the Longwood University Undergraduate Catalog, any student who misses 10 percent of the scheduled class meetings for unexcused absences will have her/his grade lowered by one letter grade. There are 28 scheduled class meetings this semester so that missing 3 classes will result in your grade will be lowered by one letter grade. Any student who misses 25 percent of scheduled class meetings, 7 classes, will receive an “F” in the course whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Any instance of tardiness or early departure will be counted as half an absence. However, students who miss 35 minutes or more of a class period will be graded as absent for that class meeting.

Absences are considered excused when they result from participation in a college-sponsored activity, from a recognizable emergency or from serious illness. Students must provide appropriate documentation to the instructor for an absence to be considered excused. Regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused, students are responsible for material covered in their absence and are expected to come to subsequent class meetings fully prepared.

**All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and kept out of sight during class.

CALENDARIO DE CLASES
