George Ambelang, Palo Alto barber

CUT HAIR FOR HALF-CENTURY IN CARDINAL SHOP

By S.L. Wykes

The metallic clicks of swift-moving scissors still compete with the murmurings from the corner television, but the Cardinal Barber Shop is quieter than usual these days.

Not because there's any lack of clientele at the Ramona Street shop tucked up against Palo Alto's vintage 1934 Cardinal Hotel. On Thursday afternoon, four men were waiting to be seated and draped and trimmed in one of the well-worn leather barber chairs.

But barber George Ambelang isn't standing in his usual place. A soft-spoken fixture at the Cardinal for a half-century, he died in his sleep last week. He was 76, and apart from some arthritis in his hip, his wife Marian said, he had no complaints.

Every time Marian Ambelang asked her husband why he didn't retire, he'd say, with the words of someone who's happy in his work, ``Why should I?''

Son of a barber, and brother of a barber, too, Mr. Ambelang came to California from Wisconsin to cut hair in 1953 and settled at the Cardinal's shop two years later. Some people might think the job he did was tedious and tiring. He and his cohort of 20-some years, Gerardo Macareño, worked 11-hour days. And remember, the client is the one who gets to sit down.

Even as he aged, Mr. Ambelang was energetic. He and his wife traveled from their Sunnyvale home -- 27 times to Hawaii and visits to Europe, too. They raised three children and became proud grandparents of three and great-grandparents of one.

Mr. Ambelang loved to give those famous first haircuts, his wife said. He knew at least two surefire ways to cure the fidgets. He kept a big bowl of bubble gum and lollipops close at hand.

He didn't charm his customers by blabbing at them. His was a more gentlemanly demeanor. One of his 20-year regulars, George Hartley, said Mr. Ambelang wasn't like ``some barbers who never shut up. He talked, but he didn't overdo it.''

“He spoke when he was spoken to,” his wife explained. Then it would be a well-educated remark. When he wasn't cutting hair, he could be seen with a newspaper, reading every word, she said, “so he knew what he was talking about when he talked.”

Shopmate Macareño has had a somber week, knowing there would be people who would come into the shop expecting to see Mr. Ambelang, that he would have to tell them the bad news and see their faces change from anticipation to sadness. To quell their disbelief, Macareño keeps within reach a copy of the death notice printed in the newspaper. He's doing his best to keep up with the steady flow of clients who clearly prefer the decor and easy camaraderie of a barbershop that's not a salon.
