A tragic hero is usually a noble and influential person who meets destruction because of a personal flaw and the opposition of others. Who do you consider the tragic hero, Antigone or Creon?

Both characters fit the definition. Antigone’s excessive pride leads her to defy Creon. Creon’s stubbornness and obsession with power keep him from taking good advice and lead to the destruction of his family. Are Creon and Antigone victims of circumstances beyond their control, or to they freely choose their fates? Explain.

Assignment:

In a formal five-paragraph essay, choose which character you believe to be the tragic protagonist/hero. This should be a persuasive essay to convince your reader that your view is the correct view.

Your essay should contain the following:

Introduction: Hook

Topic sentence

Thesis statement + three supports (last sentence in your introductory paragraph)

Body: Three paragraphs (5-7 sentences each)

Transitional hook from the preceding paragraph (topic sentence)

One quotation of support per paragraph (cited with speaker’s

name and line number in parentheses)

Do not include the quotes in the 5-7 sentence count

Example: “’I do admit it. I do not deny it.’” (Antigone 372)

How can the reader relate to what you are talking about?
