* A mail-land was an area of land capable of supporting 4 cows or 8 two-year-old cattle or 20 sheep.

The 8th Duke of Argyll determined that a minimum of 4 mail-land was necessary to provide a reasonable living for a tenant, and this was the basis for the removal of cottars and tenants of small crofts from Tiree in the 1800s.

** Tenants includes bowmen, mailers etc. on farms held by tacksmen, minister & chamberlain.
