Scene 1: At the Kato family’s house

Opening screen text reads: Mr Sasaki has been away for a week on a business trip to Osaka. He returns home today. On his way home he visits one of his neighbours, Mrs Kato. Mr and Mrs Kato went on a family trip to Okinawa last month. When they came home they gave Mr and Mrs Sasaki a nice souvenir.

Mr Sasaki enters the garden in front of the Kato family’s house. He is carrying a small suitcase and a shopping bag. Approaching the veranda, he announces his arrival: ‘Konnichi wa. Sasaki desu!’ Mrs Kato opens the shoji sliding door and steps out onto the veranda: ‘Maa, Sasaki san.’ She bows as she welcomes him: ‘Irasshai.’ Mr Sasaki bows slightly as he replies: ‘Aa, doomo. Ima Oosaka kara kaette kimashita.’ Mrs Kato bows once more: ‘Sore wa doomo. Otsukare sama deshita.’ She gestures toward the open door: ‘Doozo, agatte kudasai.’ Mr Sasaki: ‘Jaa, chotto, ojamasu.’ He removes his shoes, steps up onto the veranda and follows Mrs Kato inside.

Inside the house, Mrs Kato kneels on the tatami mat and places a zabuton opposite her for Mr Sasaki. He kneels, lowering his bags onto the tatami beside him, and then bows deeply to her. Mrs Kato: ‘Ocha demo, ikaga desu ka.’ Mr Sasaki declines with a slight shake of the head: ‘Iie, sugu ni shitsurei shimasu kara, okamai naku.’ Mrs Kato: ‘Soo desu ka.’ Mr Sasaki reaches into his shopping bag and withdraws a gift-wrapped parcel. With both hands he presents it to Mrs Kato: ‘Anoo, kore, tsumaranai mono desu ga …’ She accepts the gift, also with both hands: ‘Maa, itsumo sumimasen.’ Then she bows: ‘Arigatoo gozaimasu.’ She carefully places the gift to one side on the tatami beside her, then looks back at Mr Sasaki: ‘Sore de, Oosaka wa, doo deshita ka.’ As the camera focuses on the gift beside Mrs Kato, the conversation continues. Mr Sasaki: ‘Totemo, isogashikatta desu. Demo, shigoto wa, umaku ikimashita.’ Mrs Kato: ‘Aa, sore wa yokatta desu ne.’

Scene 2: At the Sasaki family’s house

Opening screen text reads: After visiting Mrs Kato, Mr Sasaki goes home. Mrs Sasaki, their daughter Chika, and their homestay student, Alex, are waiting for his return.

Inside the Sasaki home, Chika and Alex are in a room together when they hear Mr Sasaki’s voice outside: ‘Tadaima.’ They then hear Mrs Sasaki’s voice in reply: ‘Okaeri nasai.’ Chika registers her father’s return: ‘A! Otoosan da!’ The shoji door opens and Mr Sasaki enters the room carrying his bag, followed by his wife who is holding the other bag and her husband’s jacket. Alex: ‘Tadaima.’ Chika and Alex welcome him: ‘Okaeri nasai.’ As Chika jumps to her feet, Mr Sasaki puts down his suitcase and extends his arms toward his daughter: ‘Chika.’ She goes to her father and he hugs her: ‘Orikoo ni shiteta ka.’ Chika: ‘Un.’ He sits on the tatami beside a low table and lifts Chika onto his lap. He looks across at Alex, seated nearby: ‘Arekkusu wa, doo? Ganbatteru ka.’ Alex moves closer as he replies: ‘Hai, maamaa desu.’ Mrs Sasaki kneels at the table beside her husband as he reaches into his bag for a gift, which, with one hand, he places on the table in front of Alex. Mr Sasaki: ‘Hora, kore, omiyage!’ Alex, with both hands, picks up the gift: ‘Arigatoo gozaimasu.’ Then Mr Sasaki, again with one hand, presents Chika with her gift: ‘Kore wa Chika no.’ Chika smiles with delight as she receives the present: ‘Uwaa, omiyage! Otoosan, akete mo ii no?’ Her father nods: ‘Un, ii yo.’ The girl looks at her mother: ‘Waai!’ Mrs Sasaki watches, smiling, as Chika begins to open the gift: ‘Chika chan, yokatta ne. Nani ka na.’ Chika continues carefully, easing the sticky tape from the paper and slowly opening her parcel. When the gift is finally revealed, Chika lifts it up and places it gently on the table: ‘Uwaa, kawaii!’ Still holding his present with both hands, Alex looks across at Mr Sasaki: ‘Otoosan, boku mo akete mo ii desu ka.’ Mr Sasaki nods: ‘Un, mochiron.’ Alex quickly rips the paper from the gift and tosses it onto the table. Mr and Mrs Sasaki, and Chika, look horrified as they witness Alex’s behaviour.
