Garden Plot Sizes and Pricing
A gardening fee of $10 per Box, $10per 10’X10’Row & Hoe Plot and/or $20 per 20’X20’ Row & Hoe plot is required before any garden plot can be assigned (waived for 2017). This fee will go toward expenses of the community garden (water bills, plant/seed purchases, community tools, etc.). Limited larger plots for row and hoe gardening will be available upon request. All checks are to be made payable to Hamilton Urban Garden Systems.
In addition a refundable clean up deposit of $10.00 for a box and $25.00 for a row and hoe garden plot is required (waived for 2017). This clean-up deposit will be returned at the end of the gardening year after you have removed all of your plants and cleaned your plot, or you can donate your clean up deposit to the Gardening Program.
Any gardening site and surrounding area that is neglected in excess of 14 days will be cleaned out for new rental. HUGS is not responsible for preparing raised boxes or row and hoe garden plots for gardeners.
Rules and Regulations
Gardeners will keep trash and litter out of their gardening site, as well as from adjacent pathways and fences. Garden sites are to be cared for at least once a week. It is the gardener’s responsibility to have a fellow gardener or friend care for their site if they are unable to do so in any given week. If a gardener must abandon their site for any reason, they will notify the garden leadership. If a site becomes unkempt, the assigned gardener will be given 1 weeks’ notice to clean it up. At that time, it will be re-assigned or tilled in. Two or more gardeners per site is permitted and encouraged if you have a busy schedule.

  1. Garden plot assignments will be given first to returning gardeners then on a first come first serve basis.
  2. Gardeners may harvest vegetables and flowers from their garden ONLY.
  3. Community tools, hoses, etc., must be returned to their place of storage after each visit to the garden.
  4. At the end of the growing season, gardeners are responsible for clearing their site of all plant material and leaving the site as they found it.
  5. Children are welcomed in the garden but must have adult supervision at all times.
  6. This is a carry in, carry out garden. Trash must be removed from the site at the end of each garden visit.
  7. On or before December 1 of each year the lot will be cleared of all plant debris, weeds and dead plants. All organic material may be placed in composting piles or bins maintained on the property.
  8. Tall crops will be planted where they will not shade neighboring plots.
  9. Organic methods of gardening are the onlymethod of gardening allowed. Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides are strictly forbidden in the garden.
  10. Pets that are brought to the garden must be on a leash. Disruptive pets will be barred from the garden.

Release of Hamilton Urban Garden Systems (HUGS) and its Volunteers and Employees:

The gardeners using the garden do so at their own risk and agree to release HUGS from and against any all claims, of whatever kind, nature, or legal theory, against HUGS, brought either by or on behalf of the undersigned gardener(s), the undersigned’s employees, the undersigned’s agents, the undersigned’s contractors or their heirs or next of kin, and on account of any liability or responsibility to the undersigned which claims is based, in whole or in part, upon HUGS allowing the undersigned to garden in the Community Garden.

For and in consideration of HUGS’ permission to garden as set forth above, the undersigned, for him/herself, for his/her heirs, for its agents its contractors, executers, administrators, beneficiaries and assigns, does hereby agree and contract to a indemnify and hold HUGS’, its volunteers, its employees harmless against any and all damages, claims, losses, liabilities and expenses, including without limitation, reasonable legal fees and expenses which may be imposed upon or incurred by HUGS’ because of a claim or cause of action brought by or on behalf of the undersigned, for him/herself, for his/her heirs, executers, administrators, beneficiaries and assigns, which is based in whole or in part upon the undersigned.
