Tower Hamlets Law Centre
Tower Hamlets Law Centre, which emerged from the amalgamation of two organisations, namely-West Stepney Green Law Centre and Stepney Green Law Centre in 1975, provides legal advice and representation, mainly to people who work and live in the borough, but also provide national and regional services. A high proportion of our service users come from a wide variety of ethnic minority community groups. Problems of unemployment and poverty are widespread in our service areas.
We focus on work that helps people deal with the causes and symptoms of poverty. We currently have Legal Aid Contracts in Housing and Immigration and Asylum, at our offices in Commercial Road and a Housing contract at the Roma Support Group office in Canning Town. We obtained Specialist Level Quality mark status in 2000 and Lexcel Accreditation in 2013.We also provide limited advice on welfare benefits, housing and immigration under a contract with London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We employ 10 FTE advice and support staff.
Our professional services take on matters from initial enquiry to representation in the Higher Courts, as necessary to resolve our clients’ problems. Our caseworkers rely on support staff and dedicated volunteers, collaborating to deliver effective, high quality legal services at low cost.
The Law Centre currently receives funding from a variety of sources including the Legal Aid Agency, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Trust for London, Tudor Trustand the London Legal Support Trust. We have long-standing partnerships with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Norton Rose Fullbright.
Local people, service users, representatives of organisations in Tower Hamlets and others who support our work are entitled to apply to be members of the Law Centre.The Law Centre is governed by a Management Committee annually elected from the membership.
The day to day management is led by a Senior Solicitor and Chief Executive.The Centre Administrator role will work with the Senior Management Team to ensure that effective and efficient delivery of services to clients.
