Kathryn Wasserman Davis Scholarships in Critical Languages
These grants are merit-based and are intended for individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: foreign languages, international, global or area studies, international politics and economics, peace and security studies, and/or conflict resolution. The grant covers the full comprehensive fee for one summer at the Middlebury Language Schools, plus transportation to and from Middlebury’s Vermont campus and program related expenses. One summer of intensive immersion language at Middlebury is the equivalent of one full year of language study taken during the regular academic year. Language study levels include beginner to graduate level in Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Japanese or Portuguese. There are additional intensive immersion summer programs at Middlebury College for other languages but this grant is not intended for them.

Critical Language Scholarship Program
A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in critical need foreign languages. Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. Languages include Arabic, Persian,
Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.

International Summer and Winter University: Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin
Each summer and winter the Humboldt University offers a variety of short programs (one week to about a month) in both German and English, which span a variety of topics including language study, cultural and international studies, and the arts. Courses include class as well as fieldtrips and other outings to various cultural and political sites in Berlin. The program is intended for those interested in German cultural, political, historical, and media studies. Course fees range from approximately 400 – 800 Euro depending on the length and type of program.

Foreign Service Institute: School of Language Studies
The School of Language Studies is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute located in Arlington, Virginia. The School provides intensive language training in approximately 70 languages and familiarizes students with cultural norms and other relevant background material. Classes usually have six or fewer students who typically spend five hours per day in class and an additional three hours studying independently.

IES Abroad
The Institute for International Education of Students is a non-profit organization, which has provided students from U.S. colleges and universities academic study abroad opportunities since 1950. It sponsors six different programs in Germany, three in Berlin and three in Freiburg. The options include summer study, semester, and full academic year programs, which specialize in Language and Area Studies, Urban Studies (Berlin), Environmental Studies (Freiburg), and an English-taught European Union program (Freiburg). IES offers a number of merit-based scholarships as well as the David Porter Diversity Scholarship for students of color, the GLBT population, students from different religious and ethnic groups, and students with physical disabilities.

Freie Universität Berlin: International Summer University
The Fubis program is intended for students interested in German culture, history, language, and art and caters to a variety of language proficiencies, with German language courses being held on at least five levels of proficiency and many classes taught in English. There are two sessions: one which begins in June and ends in mid-July and one which begins in mid-July and ends mid-August. Admission is rolling and the number of participants per course is limited to 18 students so early registration is strongly recommended.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program
This 9 month program (September through May) provides young American professionals (ages 23-34) with two high-level work placements in the federal government and in the private sector in Germany. Three seminars taking place throughout Europe provide and in-depth understanding of issues facing Germany and the European Union today. Candidates are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration, economics, journalism, law, political science and public policy. Ideal candidates have a master’s degree or at least 2 years work experience in their field.

Brown in Germany
Brown’s study abroad programs in Germany are based at Humboldt-University in Berlin and Eberhardt-Karls University in Tuebingen. Study abroad at either site combines a strong academic program with firsthand experience of the dynamic process of change within today’s Germany.

NYU in Berlin
The program at NYU in Berlin is designed for students in the social sciences and humanities who want to earn credit in their majors—including sociology, history, politics, and European studies—while having a transformative experience abroad. Courses are taught in English, and German language courses are offered at all levels. Day trips and guided excursions in and around Berlin are included in the program. The program is held at Humboldt University and is available in the fall, spring, summer, and full academic year.

Duke in Berlin
Duke in Berlin was founded at the Freie Universität of West Berlin in 1988 before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since 1990 the fall semester has taken place at Humboldt Universität in former East Berlin while the spring-summer semester continues to be based at the Freie Universität. Students attend Duke University courses taught by German faculty and by the program’s resident director. Students with sufficient German may take courses in the Berlin universities. Qualified engineering students may take courses at the Technische Universität Berlin. The program helps students advance their language skills, deepens their understanding of German culture, and broadens their grasp of the social sciences, art history, and technology in a German and European context.

Goethe Institut
The Goethe-Institut has 50 years' experience in teaching German as a foreign language, teacher training and developing curricula, examinations and course materials. Boston University Dresden Program for Engineers
This program is approved only for sophomore Engineering students without proficiency in German. Students enroll directly at the Technische Universtaet Dresden and all classes are taught in English. The program is offered only for the spring semester.

Howard R. Swearer International Service Fellowship
The Swearer Fellowship is a full-time summer fellowship for current sophomore, junior, and senior students who want to spend the summer pursuing international service work. Students on Financial Aid will be given priority in the application process. The work can be of the student’s own design or can be a pre-existing internship. Funds may not be used to pay fees for service programs nor may it be used for tuition. Awards range up to $3500.

Undergraduate Teaching and Research Awards (UTRA)
With an UTRA fellowship you collaborate on a research project with a faculty member. This can either occur individually or as a part of a larger group and often takes place over the summer or during the semester. Research may be done on-site out of the country. These fellowships are excellent opportunities to gain understanding of not only a particular topic, but also of the research process itself.

Austro-American Association of Boston Scholarship
The Austro-American Association of Boston annually offers a scholarship of $1000 - $1500 to fund a project that focuses on Austrian culture. Project areas may include history, literature, art, architecture, folk customs, music, or contemporary life.

Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V. Praktikum
Students accepted into this program receive work experience lasting at least three months in event management, PR, and or office management. Applicants should be interested in political, social, or cultural German or European studies, should have good computer skills, be independent, organized, flexible and enthusiastic. Those with a good knowledge of the German political system, foreign languages, especially Eastern European languages, and business management are preferred.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Gilman Scholarship Program accepts applications two times per year. Ideally, students should begin their application one full semester before their study abroad program is scheduled to begin.

Hessische Internationale Sommeruniversitaeten (ISU)
Each summer at Phillips-Universtaet Marburg, there is program focusing on a specific theme that deals with political, sociological, and cultural themes. The program includes seminars in both German and English and German language courses. Applicants should be advanced undergraduates. Marburg is a traditional university town in the heart of Germany and participants will enrich their knowledge of German culture and language while studying international themes.
