Dear Coaches:
The Ball State University Speech Team, Department of Communication Studies, and College of Communication Media and Information are pleased to invite you to the Red Carpet Affair Junior, a middle school speech tournament to be held on our campus on November 4, 2017. Our one day tournament will include 3 rounds of competition. Awards will be presented to the top six speakers(double scored) in each event and top 3 schools in small and large divisions.

Events
We will offer Humorous, Dramatic, Declamation, Discussion, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Impromptu, Extemp, Memorized Duo, Scripted Duo, & Radio Broadcasting.
Radio
Round I – Commercial
30 minute prep and 1 minute speaking time
Round II –Editorial
Provided to the student, 1 minute prep and 1 minute speaking time
Round III –News
2 minutes speaking time
Extemp (Domestic Questions)
Students will draw 30 minutes before the preliminary round and will deliver the same question in subsequent rounds. We will provide 3 questions per student and a research article with each question.

How should the U.S. government respond to natural disasters?
1) Before: What should the federal government do to mitigate potential damage
from natural disasters?
2) During: What should the federal government do to help affected populations
during natural disasters?
3) After: What should the federal government do to alleviate long-term damage
from natural disasters?
Double Entry
Students may enter two events, with the exception of Discussion & Radio. In duo, both contestants may double; however any given student may not participate in two duos of any kind. Those students doubled in Impromptu must go to Impromptu last. Double-entered students are responsible for getting to both events during rounds. While judges will be made aware of double entered students on their ballots, students should still inform their judges that they are double entered.
Awards
We will have awards for the top 12in all events. Team Trophies will be given to the top 3 teams with 1 to 20 entries and to the top 3 teams with 21 and more entries.
Judges
Each school is required to provide one full-time qualified judge for each six entries entered or portion thereof. We can arrange for hired judges. A hired judge can be hired for $30 (to cover 6 slots).
Food
Concessions will be available from registration to awards and there is a food court as well.
Entries
We should receive your entry no later than 5:00pm, Tuesday, October 31, 2017. While we prefer you register using Speechwire, if that is not possiblemail us your entries to .
Parking
It is suggested that you park north of the Robert Bell building (RED R2 lot) and gain access to the Letterman building through the Robert Bell building. Be sure to look for signs. Meters and “Reserved” (handicapped, business, and numbered) spaces are enforced 24/7. You will be ticketed!
