Paper/Presentation – You will write an APA-style review of literature that overviews theory in your area of specialization. You will also work with a classmate to conduct a 60-minute teaching session covering the major theories inthis research area. Your presentation will include explication, discussion, and applied learning activities. Dr. Witt will advise you as you prepare this session. You will receive separate grades on the paper and presentation.

Paper

  • Read broadly in yourarea of specialization to identify the major theories guiding research in the area. Several textbooks are available in the T.A. office.
  • Write a cogent survey of these theories in the style of a Literature Review, including citations and references in APA format.
  • Describe traditional theories as well asthoseframing recently published articles. Overview the major tenets/terms of each theory, citing a few specific research applications and findings.
  • Consider the overall structure of your paper, and use subheadings to organize the report for your readers. If you wish to focus on a specific sub-area, first overview the larger theoretical landscape.
  • Plan to write about 12-15 pages including references. Length will be determined in part by the scope of your selected specialization (e.g., there are more interpersonal theories than instructional theories). The average paper will probably include about 6 theories. If your research turns up fewer than 4 theories, consult with Dr. Witt. Do not review theories covered in the textbook, but if they are central to your area, at least mention them and cite them in your paper.
  • The paper is due at the time of your presentation, but you can take an extra week if you need it.

Presentation

  • You will be the primary instructor on the day the class discusses theory in your area of specialization. Assume that your classmates have little theoretical knowledge beyond the Miller chapter, which they will have read in advance.
  • Your 1-hour teaching session will be the first item on our class agenda. You will identify and discussthree or more major theories in your specialization.
  • Use a variety of pedagogical techniques to keep the class interesting. Teach like the ideal instructor you wish you could have every semester.
  • After the class, send your classmates and Dr. Witt a Word document containing half-page summaries of the theories you presented. Other notes/handouts are welcome but not required.
  • A planning meeting with Dr. Witt is scheduled for one week in advance. Bring a detailed outline of both content and instructional methodologies, and he will help you fine-tune your session.
