Dear Mr Peek,

Re: YOUR REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Thank you for your request for information dated 30th March 2012 which the Council received on

30th March 2012. I understand your request to be:

“Human trafficking and enslavement is currently estimated to directly affect 27 million people worldwide. Recent police investigations in Manchester and beyond have shown clearly that this issue is relevant and real both generally in England and specifically in Greater Manchester.

1. Please would you provide me with details of your strategies, to include associated budget and full-time-equivalent staffing figures, for:

a) Preventing Tameside Borough being attractive to human traffickers.

b) Detecting human trafficking within, to, from, or run in Tameside, including but not restricted to what strategies are in place for cross-border work with other authorities.

c) Dealing with perpetrators of human trafficking after such detection.

d) Assisting victims of human trafficking.

2. Please would you provide figures of the number of cases of human trafficking in the last 10 years, broken down by year*, by gender and by age range (under 16, 16-17, 18-20, 21-24, and then in 10 year ranges) within your authority’s area that were:

a) Suspected/reported i. To include sub-figure on the number of cases that did not progress further

b) Investigated

c) Verified

d) Brought to closure (with indication of type of closure)

e) Stalled

3. As per item 2 please provide figures for such casework that has taken place on a cross-border basis.

4. If you have any available, please also supply 2 example cases – made anonymous where necessary for legal/victim protection purposes.

* - I appreciate that there are some - if not many - cases that will be suspected in one year but investigated and/or verified and/or closed in other(s). If possible, please allocate each case a letter such that its progress can be tracked through the years. If this is not possible, please allocate such cases to the year they were verified (if this was the case), investigated (if reports/suspicions could cont be verified) or suspected/reported (if no investigation work occurred).”
