Welcome to our Spanish class! We are about to set out on a fantastic journey in which we will be studying one

of the most popular languages in the world. Below you will find information and policies for our class this year.

Please read everything carefully, then sign and return the bottom of the last page.

Objectives (as per California Framework Standards, CLTA, National Frameworks, ACTFL)

The goals of Spanish from the first to the fourth year are:

  • To understand, read, write and speak Spanish and to enjoy the process of learning a new language.
  • To grow in knowledge about the geography, customs, culture and diversity of the Spanish speaking world.
  • To appreciate the different aspects of the language study and to see how learning a new language can increase your understanding of English.
  • To grow in the awareness of the interdependence and diversity of all people and the beauty inherent in a language and the diversity of the people who speak it.

EXPECTED SCHOOL-WIDE LEARNING RESULTS (ESLR’s)

In order to accomplish the San Dimas High School vision, the foreign language department promotes ESLRs as follows:

  1. Students will be effective oral, written, artistic and technological communicators.
  2. Through new language concepts and culture, the students will continually challenge themselves to produce a quality independent work during the learning process.
  3. Collaborative work promotes personal and group’s success. The Spanish class comprises diverse group activities to accomplish this purpose.
  4. Students will respect, appreciate, and understand perspectives of studied cultures, developing connection with their own culture displaying appreciation, civic responsibility, and ethical behavior

Materials

  • It is required that you bring your Spanish 1 workbook to class every day.
  • We recommend a separate 3 ring binder, at least 1 inch thick, with 5 dividers labeled “pruebas/ examenes,”

“apuntes,”“vocabulario,” “trabajo de clase,” and “tarea”. Put this syllabus in the front of your notebook.

Bring ittoclass and keep it organized. Your notebook is a tool to help you study and prepare!

  • An agenda book to write down assignments and a Spanish/ English dictionary are recommended as well.

Website

We have a special website that has games, flash cards, tutorials and practice quizzes and tests for each unit that

we willbe studying in our book. You can register for and access your online textbook from this site too. It is also

where you will findthe daily homework and important quiz and test dates.

The website address is

You are expected to gothere daily topractice what youare learning. Your grades will improve!

Class Work and Homework

  • Class work and homework will be assigned every day. Class work is due in class and homework will be

checked at the beginning of each class period. After homework has been checked place it in the “tarea”

section of your notebook. Do not throw it out!

  • Your assignments should be labeled in the upper right hand corner as follows:

name (Pablo Jimenez)

date (el 7 de septiembre)

period (período 5)

homework # (Tarea # 4)

  • Homework will be corrected in class. Use your correcting pen to fix mistakes! Incomplete or illegible

homework will receive no credit.

  • Homework or class work will be collected for credit about once a week. No work = 0 points as does

work with no corrections.

  • Late homework is not accepted.

If you are caught copying another student’s work or you and another student turn in the same work, both you

and the other student will receive a zero on theassignment and will be referred to the assistant principal’s

office for cheating. (Student Handbook p11-15)

Quizzes and Tests

  • Vocabulary quizzes are given for each chapter. You are expected to know the meaning of each word, its

spelling, its articles and howit is used.

  • Grammar quizzes will be given usually once per chapter.
  • Chapter tests will be given every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • The student needs to make arrangements with the teacher to make up tests or quizzes

during intervention 5th period immediately following an absence.

Both homework and class work serve as a review for tests and quizzes!

SDCP Best Work- Certain projects, essays and dialogs will be identified as “best work” throughout the

year. Don’t forget to choose one of these designated assignments to upload at the end of 2nd semester.

Participation

Participation is very important in a foreign language class. Students are expected to participate in class and

participation will be monitored. Poor participation will affect the grade.

Grading Standards

Grades will be calculated based on the total points from homework, class work, participation, tests, quizzes,

projectsand oral proficiency. Current grades will be posted on ABI. It is your responsibility to keep track

of your grade on ABI. DO NOT ASK ME ABOUT YOUR GRADE DURING CLASS TIME. If you have a discrepancy,

make an appointment with me and bring pertinent proof of your concern.

Grades are broken down as follows:

90-100% A60-69% D

80-89% Bbelow 60% F

70-79% C

Grades are not rounded. Take advantage of extra credit assignments to round your own grade.

Absences and Tardies

Students are expected to attend class every day (EC48260). If you are late to class or absent for any reason,

you are responsible for information that you missed, work that was collected and any tests or quizzes that were

given that day. Get a few phone numbers oremails from classmates to get the work or notes you missed and/ or

check our website.

DO NOT ASK ME THE NEXT DAY WHAT THE ASSIGNMENT WAS UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED THE WEBSITE

OR HAVE CONTACTED A CLASSMATE. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what assignments, quizzes or

tests have been missed as the result of an absence.

  • An excused absence (cleared within 72 hours) allows the student to complete all assignments and tests missed

duringthe absence within a reasonable period of time.

  • The assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, be not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments

that the pupil missed during the absence (EC48205b).

  • If you will be absent due to a school activity or field trip, get the work you will miss and turn in the

work thatwill be due that daybefore your absence.

  • Missed tests and quizzes can bemade up during intervention period.
  • Four or more tardies per quarter will result in a “U” for citizenship for that quarter.

Extra Credit

There will be very little extra credit offered during the year. It is best to take advantage of an opportunity when it

arises because there may not be another.

Hall Passes

Students will receive 4 passes per semester that can be used for restroom privileges, water, ordinary heath office

requests and going to lockers. Students who use up the four passes will be allowed to leave class but will receive

a tardy. Unused passes can be redeemed for extra credit at the end of the semester. Students who abuse the hall

pass privilege will lose it for the rest of the year and will be referred to the assistant principal. The teacher may

requestthat the student leave his/her cell phone with the teacher when leaving class with the pass.

Behavior

The students will:

  • Be respectful of themselves, others the teacher and school property.
  • Give their best effort.
  • Be in their assigned seats with proper materials when the bell rings.
  • Raise their hand if they wish to speak or participate.
  • Not talk while the teacher is speaking.
  • Not have food, gum or drinks (except water) in class.
  • Leave class or their seat only when excused by the teacher.
  • Not wear hats, use foul language or racial slurs in class.
  • Not have cell phones, ipods or other electronic devices in class. (They will be confiscated and brought to

the office at the teacher’s convenience)

  • Dress for success and follow the dress code.

Consequences for violation of our rules may include BIP, parent phone call, Saturday School,

school discipline meeting and contract, and/or a drop in participation grade (disruptions impede participation

and thus would have a negative impact on that aspect of the grade).
