Course Objective and Purpose:

Visual Arts/Comprehensive I introduces art history, art criticism, aesthetic judgment and studio production. This course emphasizes the ability to understand and use the elements of art and principles of design through a variety of media, processes and visual resources. We will also explore master artworks for historical and cultural significance using the Georgia Performance Standards for Visual Arts.

Skills to Master:

At the end of this course you will:

  • understand and know the elements of art and principles of design
  • be able to apply all the elements of art and principles of design to your own art making projects
  • be able to recall important artists, art history movements and relate that to their current projects.

Needs and Resources

Required Materials:

  • Pocket Folder to keep loose papers and notes in
  • 9x12 Sketchbook (Spiral bound & no lines!)
  • A #2 PENCIL…EVERY DAY
  • A HAND SHARPENER…EVERY DAY
  • 22”X 28” poster board: This will be used to keep your artwork and projects in.
  • Sign-up for the Remind Me Application
  • $15 for classroom art supplies

Recommended Materials (for more serious artists):

  • small set of Prismacolor colored pencils
  • small pouch to keep supplies separate and orderly
  • Any other personal art supplies that you want to use

Tentative Course Content

We will be completing artwork and projects that will cover the following content:

  • Elements: Line, Value, Shape, Color, Form, Space, Texture
  • Principles: Contrast, Balance, Rhythm, Emphasis, Harmony, Unity, Pattern
  • Color Theory
  • Printmaking
  • Drawing Skills
  • Art History
  • Ceramics
  • Sculpture
  • Painting with Watercolor, Tempera, and Acrylic
  • Artist-inspired Projects
  • Design Basics/utilizing good use of composition

Policies and Procedures

Class Rules:

  1. Respectyourself, classmates, teacher, supplies, and classroom.

Disrespect of any kind and non-compliancewill result in disciplinary action (see below).

  1. Food and Drink is allowed in moderation. Anyone who does not clean up after themselves will cause the whole class to lose this privilege. Food trash DOES NOT get thrown away in the big trash can. That one only gets emptied once a week if needed.
  2. Electronic devices:

Devices are only allowed for personal music listening while working or for accessing resources during production. No one else should be able to hear your music and you must wait to use your device until all instruction has been given.Earbuds or headphones may be used to cover ONE ear only; you must be able to hear what’s going on around you. NO CHARGING OF DEVICES!!!

  • If you are not following the cell phone policy, you will be asked to put your cell phone away and the incident will be documented.
  • After 3 cell phone violations, you will lose the privilege to use your cell phone and your parent will be contacted.
  • Any subsequent incidents will result in an office referral.
  1. The school’s TARDY and DRESS CODE POLICY is enforced (see below). Students need to be seated & readywhen the bell rings.
  2. NO TALKING while the teacher is talking or during class instruction.
  3. Always CLEAN UP after yourself before leaving the classroom.
  4. NO MORE than FOUR people at a table.
  5. Vulgar Language will not be permitted and will be handled using the discipline steps listed below.

DAILY CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Sign-in on the clipboard located in its designated area. Failure to sign-in will result in you being marked absent for the day. Do not remove the clipboard from its designated area.
  2. Begin working on Bell Ringers. The Bell Ringers will be written weekly and will be graded every two weeks on the following Monday. Late Bell Ringers will not be taken past 2 weeks late. This easy grade can hurt or help your class average.
  3. Students are to remain in their seats and work with the classmates at their table. Students may get out of their seat to retrieve or return artwork or art supplies, but are not allowed to walk around the room off task.
  4. Do not yell or talk loudly across the classroom.
  5. Sitting where you want, listening to music, and the use of your cellular device are all privileges and these privileges can be revoked at any time.
  6. Start cleaning up with 10 minutes left in class. After cleanup, you are to remain in your seat until the bell rings. Failure to do so will be documented and the appropriate discipline step will be taken.

Grading/Evaluation:

Classwork: Drawings, sketchbook assignments, bell ringers, quizzes & participation 40%

Assessments: Projects, written reports, tests, etc. 60%

Quarter 2: SLO Post-Test will count 10%, Classwork 35%, and Assessments 55%

Rubrics: Each project needs to be turned in with a rubric. The rubric consists of the Essential Questions for the project, your self-assessment, and the grading rubric for the teacher to complete. Projects will not be graded without a rubric attached. Projects that are turned in incomplete will automatically use the appropriate amount of points for being incomplete in categories such as craftsmanship, creativity, over-all effort, etc.

Course Requirements/Expectations:

Attendance
Each student is required to sign in at the beginning of each class and attendance will be taken daily. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for missed work. Five days will be granted for make-up work with an excused absence or the student will receive a zero for the assignment. All classroom resources will be located on the teacher’s webpage for access.

Tardy Policy

Students who arrive to class late must present a pass before entering (except 3rd block). All unexcused tardies are documented and a parent will be contactedby the third tardy and the student will receive afterschool detention. All subsequent tardies will result in an office referral.

Dress Code Policy

Students should not enter into the class unless they are in compliance with the school’s dress code policy. The dress code is as follows:

  • White or maroon collared shirt. The collar of your shirt must be visible at all times during class. If the teacher has to ask you to see your collared shirt, this will count as a dress code violation.
  • Hoodies: Must be a New Hampstead or a solid color of maroon, gold, white, or black with NO LOGOS, WORDS, or PICTURES.
  • PANTS or SHORTS must be black or khaki. No leggings or cargo pants allowed. SKIRTS must be below your fingertips.

If you fail to follow the dress code, you will immediately be sent to administration and the incident will be documented. After the third dress code offense, your parents will be contacted and you will be assigned afterschool detention. Anything after the fourth offense will result in an office referral.

Discipline Steps:

The following steps will be taken for Level 1 and most Level 2 behaviors. These behaviors can consist of disrespect, defiance, and/or refusal to follow the classroom rules.

1st Offense: documented warning

2nd Offense: documented behavior and parent contact

3rd Offense: document behavior, parent contact, and detention

4th Offense: officereferral

Late Work Policy

All work turned in late after deadline will receive 10% less of grade earned and an additional 10% each day that I grade late work.

Additional Information

Artwork

Students are expected/encouraged to submit artwork to be juried in local, state, and national art competitions, including school sponsored exhibits that are adjudicated by the Savannah College of Art & Design. Students agree to allow New Hampstead High School to display and otherwise use their image for publication rights and promotion. All works must be original and from the artist’s own creation.

Tutorial/Assistance

Tutorial is offered on Wednesday mornings before the start of school with 24 hours of notice. The students must obtain a pass from the teacher prior to the tutorial requested.
