2nd Quarter Syllabus

At Saraland Middle School, it is our goal to provide a world class educational system for your child. The cooperation of you and your child can help make this possible. Mrs. Mayfield and Mrs. Nitteberg are looking forward to a fun and productive year. Please read the following information carefully.

Course Description:

Seventh grade math will provide students with a curriculum that will enable them to become stronger problem-solvers. This course will allow your child to become an active learner by engaging him/her in problem-solving opportunities, hands-on learning, and performance-based assessments. Specific objectives targeted for this quarter are as follows:

7th Grade: Math Connects Course 2 (Blue Book)

7th Grade: Math Connects Course 2 (Blue Book)

  • Chapter 3: Rational Numbers (continued)
  • Chapter 4: Equations & Inequalities
  • Chapter 5: Proportions & Similarity
  • Chapter 6: Percent (We would like to at least start it before Christmas

Holidays.)

Required Materials: Please check to make sure your child has the required materials to be successful in mathematics. See the attached supply list.

These materials are to be brought to class on a daily basis. Students cannot do their best work without the ‘tools-of-the-trade’.

Homework Assignments/Assessments:

Assignments: Homework is graded and is 10% of the total mathematic grade. Skill work is a must if students are to improve. It is important that your child review each day's lesson. Homework is expected to be completed and returned the next day. Students are required to write homework assignments on their homework agenda. The homework agenda will be turned in on Friday for 10 points of the homework grade. The rest of the homework grade (90 points) comes from the actual assignments. We encourage parents to check this daily. Late homework is unacceptable and will result in lowering of the homework grade.Student's assignments should be written in pencil only, unless otherwise instructed, and all work is to be shown. Parents, please check often to see that this is being done.

Assessments: Your child will be tested upon completion of specified objectives. Please check the website and your child’s planner for assessment dates. Please check INOW Parent Home Portal frequently for your child’s grades.

Expectations:

Students are expected to enter the room silently and immediately begin posted assignments. Students must have all materials needed. A positive attitude is expected so that maximum learning may take place.

Grading Per Nine Weeks:

  • Standards Based Assessment60%
  • Teacher Choice 30%
  • Homework 10%

Parents and students are urged to check grades using INOW.

Absences and Make-up Work:

A written excuse is required when the student returns to school. In the case of an absence, the students are expected to make up any work or assessments missed. This is the responsibility of the students to turn in or complete any work that is missed during an absence. An absent folder containing missed assignments and tests will be provided.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Listen when your teacher is talking.
  2. Follow directions quickly and correctly.
  3. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  4. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
  5. Be safe, be kind, and be honest.

Consequences:

Depending on the nature of the offence, the first offence will be a warning. Excessive disruptions, lack of homework assignments, and repeated offences will result in the child having silent lunch or after-school detention. If necessary, parent letters will be sent home, parent conferences will be requested, and/or referrals to the office will occur.Disrespect will not be tolerated towards the teacher or other students.

Student/Teacher Conferences:

Please sign and send the bottom portion of this letter to your child's math teacher. Our preferred method of communication is through email. Should that not be possible we may be contacted at the school number

679-9405. Conferences may be set up by email or by calling the office with a minimum of 24 hours notice.
