Job Summary:
The Grants Consultant reports to the Director of Grant Services and provides high-value consultation to EMHS and its members in working to advance priority initiatives through external funding. This individual works with system leaders and external partners from concept development to identifying, cultivating, and soliciting grant funding from government, foundation, and other sources. Projects may be program, capital, or research initiatives. The Grant Consultant is a key member of system external fundraising efforts and in grants project development, management, and is responsible for the submission of quality grant applications for foundation, corporate and government funding. This individual will work closely with other grants staff, EMHS member organizations, the EMHS Foundation, Clinical Research Center, fiscal services, programs sponsors, and community partners.
Essential job functions include:
1) Engaging with EMHS clients and consultants to understand system needs, goals and priorities for external funding
2) Working collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment
3) Researching data and interviewing people to glean information useful in proposal development
4) Engaging with external partners and community stakeholders to collaborate in strategic partnership proposals
5)Establish positive and productive relationships with funding agencies and philanthropic organizations
6) Organizing and orchestrating the development of complex proposals involving several contributors
7) Writing and editing proposals;
8) Working in advance of deadlines to assure timely submissions
9) Working closely with junior grants staff to promote effective engagement of grants services.

Budget development
Works effectively within funder guidelines to prepare proposals that advance priority initiatives
Works with clients to ensure the accuracy, completeness, compliance with funder requirements and timeliness of grants submitted
Maintains knowledge of EMHS system priorities, initiatives, and recent awards that advance proposal development
Maintains knowledge of national objectives for healthcare reform and evidenced-based models of care to advance development of proposals that are responsive to funder interests
Research, identify and qualify potential funding opportunities from corporate, foundation, and government sources for fit with system priority initiatives
Grants Management
Follow and recommend policies and practices that maximize the effectiveness of grant services and compliance with federal and state grant policy requirements
Manages both individual projects as well as pieces of projects managed by junior staff
Manage both electronic and paper filing systems
Tracks status of projects under development and grant submittal activity. Maintains and tracks data for the grants management database
Provides post-award grants management consultation as requested.
Relationship Building and Customer Service
Advances and builds relationships with funders, Community Health & Grants department and EMHS member organizations
Promotes effective engagement of grant services throughout the system
Establishes ongoing, valuable communication with internal clients regarding the grants process
Provides consultation to clients on project concept development and supports high value, transformative initiatives
Provides consultation on the process of securing approvals to move projects forward for proposal preparation and submission to clients
Advises clients on funding opportunities and provides a plan for advancing approved programs/projects
- Develops and maintains contacts with other healthcare organizations, colleges and universities, state and local agencies, public entities, non-profit organizations, to maximize funding through collaborations
Leads the proposal generation process, particularly for complex proposals with multiple contributors to produce compelling high-quality proposals
Work closely with junior or less experienced grants staff to promote effective engagement of and successful delivery of grant services throughout the system
Acts as a role model and maintains a productive, positive team culture
System Building & Strategic Support
Serves as a grants strategy consultant that aligns with strategic plans
Maintains knowledge base of strategic directions and assesses system needs, strengths and opportunities for external funding
Prospectively maps & matches system priorities to funding opportunities including vetting of funding opportunities
Advances the development of the Office of Community Health & Grants through active engagement in department initiatives to improve population health
Coordinates with EMHS Community Relations to ensure compliance with EMHS standards for branding, and release of grant-related media coverage
Communicates and coordinates efforts with the EMHS Foundation to ensure positive funder relations including prioritization of approaches to local and regional corporate, family and community foundation funders
Other
Organize and coordinate special projects, provides periodic progress updates as assigned

Education and Experience
- Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree
- Must have at least 5+ years of successful experience in grant proposal writing with federal, state and local government, foundation and corporate grants, preferably within a healthcare setting.
- Experience with complex federal grant submissions is required as well as knowledge of Federal grant and contract regulations and policies with demonstrated work experience.
- Project management expertise is a must. Pre and post award grants management experience is a plus.

Supervision Exercised
While not having expressed authority, the Grants Consultant will use strong facilitation and negotiation skills to lead grant project teams throughout EMHS.
Supervision Received (ability to act independently)
Receives general guidance from the Director of Grant Services and acts independently to achieve established goals.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit and/or stand long periods; light lifting, bending, some walking, hand dexterity sufficient to manage keyboard functions. Must be able to work in an open office environment and possesses visual and hearing acuity necessary to discern information from the telephone, computer, printed forms, written and oral instructions from coworkers and others.
The employee is required to operate a computer keyboard and monitor (including laptop computers).
The employee must have a valid driver's license and possess his or her own transportation, or be able to make alternative transportation arrangements with reasonable notice. Occasional travel may be necessary.
