Instructor’s Guide

Your role

Since the Greenlight Test Prep video course (www.GreenlightTestPrep.com) provides most of the instruction, your role is primarily one of support. This means answering questions from the previous session’s homework and addressing any conceptual gaps that students may have.

Required resources

·  Greenlight Test Prep online video course

·  Online Study Guide (www.greenlighttestprep.com/study-guide/overview)

·  Course syllabus

·  The Official Guide to the GRE

o  Note: This book is an absolute must for anyone preparing for the GRE. It is referenced throughout the Study Guide, so each student should have a copy. You can either supply copies or ask students to get their own copy.

General format of class sessions:

During the group sessions, the instructor will:

·  answer students’ questions about their assigned homework

·  pose questions to students for additional reinforcement

·  keep students on track with their studies

·  assign homework to be completed before next class

Answering questions about assigned homework

During the classroom sessions, most of your time will be spent answering questions about the video lessons and practice questions that you assigned as homework in the previous class. Be sure to review those homework activities so that you’re prepared to answer any questions that may be asked.

You’ll notice that the course syllabus has several spaces for students to note any questions that arise while completing their homework activities. Encourage students to come to class with lots of questions.

Note: If you want to be more proactive, you might begin each session with a very brief review of the key concepts covered in the assigned lessons.

Note: If you’re a course leader with limited GRE experience, try calling on students to help answer challenging questions. Turning this time into a group effort will give others a chance to share what they’ve learned and create a team environment.

Posing additional practice questions

If your students don’t ask many questions, be sure to have questions readily available to help reinforce what was learned during the assigned homework. There are several free sources of GRE-quality questions, including:

·  www.majortests.com/gre (GRE question banks)

·  www.manhattanprep.com/gre/forums (GRE forum)

·  www.urch.com/forums/gre (GRE forum)

·  5-Pound Book of GRE practice questions (by Manhattan Prep)

·  www.manhattanprep.com/gre/challengeproblems: (GRE challenge questions)

Keeping students on track

Many students struggle with self-paced learning and need others to hold them accountable as they prepare for this challenging test. So, be sure to check in with students during classroom sessions to make sure they’re keeping up with the homework.

You should also encourage students to meet outside of class to watch the video lessons and/or answer practice questions together. Students who are part of a study group are much more likely to keep up with the course content.

The Study Guide includes several activities titled Developing the Proper Mindset. These are primarily motivational articles and are not mentioned in the syllabus. Students can choose whether or not they want to read them.

Assigning homework

Assign what’s in the course syllabus.

Important: The Study Guide directs students to complete lot of practice questions. If there isn’t much time between your scheduled classroom sessions, it isn’t crucial that students answer every practice question before the next class. What’s more important is that they view all of the video lessons, and then answer as many practice questions as they have time for.

The first class

Except for the first class, the classroom sessions have the same structure: answer students’ questions, pose questions, keep students on track, and assign new homework.

The first class is a little different; it primarily involves providing students with the resources and information required to get started on their first homework assignment.
