Job Purpose

Responsible for the strategic growth of all charity Retail and Trading income streams by driving continuous expansion and ensuring profit expectations and key standards are achieved. Ensure all activity correctly reflects and promotes the hospice brand, ethos & values.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Income generation
  • Work with the Head of Income Generation and Marketing to further develop the charities Trading Strategy in line with organisational income generation ambitions.
  • Develop the strategy for significantly increasing sales and maximising profit for all Trading income streams supported by cohesive analysis and review systems.
  • Effectively manage the overall Trading and Retail budget, provide performance analysis and report on progress and variances and implement solutions to rectify them.
  • Develop performance criteria based on sector benchmarking and ensure the Trading and Retail team continue to aspire to excellence and meet challenging key performance indicators.
  • Report to the Trading Board and Executive as required on Trading and Retail operational changes, reporting on and taking responsibility for Trading performance.
Online Trading activity
  • Develop the E-Commerce strategy and support the Operations Manager in exploring new opportunities for online Trading.
  • Develop a new retail product ranges for online, store trading and work with the Marketing Manager to develop fundraising merchandise.
Management and People Development
  • Create an effective management framework in order to recruit and develop a high performing team, maximise profitability and adhere to organisational management standards.
  • Directly Line Manage the Area Retail Manager and Operations Manager.
  • Hold overall responsibility for the volunteering programmes within Trading and ensure all volunteer management practices adhere to organisational policy and are at the forefront of charity retail sector developments.
  • Engage and inform Retail staff with all organisational and service developments and ensure staff are fully integrated into the Hospice culture.
Trading strategic development
  • Lead on strategic development of the Retail chain including the store acquisition strategy.
  • Research and scope new Trading business opportunities and develop strategies and business cases to support growth.
  • Work closely with the Finance department to develop cohesive systems to secure the Trading functions financial integrity and take responsibility for Trading and Retail’s adherence to all relevant finance and sector regulations and standards.
  • Create a framework of retail standards of excellence and ensure stores are managed and maintained to those standards through a planned upgrade programme in compliance with the Hospice brand profile.
  • Establish and manage Retail warehouse facility and work with the Facilities Manager to ensure compliance with relevant Hospice and HASAW regulations.
  • Manage and drive relationships with all external contractors and suppliers to ensure optimum value, service and compliance with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Seek out and research opportunities for further efficiencies and propose viable solutions.
Brand development and organisational profile
  • Work with the Marketing Manager to ensure all premises, facilities, signage, materials and activities are in line with organisational branding standards.
  • Work with the Head of Income Generation & Marketing to create a customer service framework to ensure the highest standards of customer experience is managed and monitored and is seamless with other customer facing functions.
  • Build a strong profile and working relationship with partner organisations and within the Charity Retail sector.
  • Ensure all Trading and Retail staff and volunteers are engaged with organisational key messages and service developments to be able to communicate knowledgably with suppliers and supporters.

Education and Qualifications /
  • Educated to Master’s degree level or equivalent

  • Knowledge of the Charity Retail sector
  • Knowledge or experience of the needs of Volunteers and the requisite management skills

Knowledge and Experience /
  • At least 5 years’ experience of Retail management
  • At least 3 years’ experience of managing people and performance management
  • Experience of strategic planning, and financial forecasting
  • Experience of delivering business growth in a Trading capacity
  • Experience and proven success in leading and managing staff in a target focused sales environment
  • Experience of setting and managing a comprehensive income and expenditure budget and taking responsibility for its delivery and costs controls
  • Experience of scoping and delivering training packages to frontline staff
  • Experience of managing staff across multiple locations
  • Ability to engage staff in and implement brand development strategies in a Retail setting
  • Proven ability to manage contractors to agreed service level agreements
  • Knowledge of digital stock control systems and cash management systems
  • Knowledge of commercial property leasing and shop refitting
  • Must have a clean Drivers licenceand use of a car for business use
