1.0 method of integration

With inband integration, one pathway between the PBX and the Octel 250 transmits both call information and voice communications

With inband integration, one pathway between the PBX and the Octel 250 transmits both call information and voice communications. The pathway is provided by two-wire analog single-line circuits that connect to FLT boards in the Octel 250. Calls to an Octel port are preceded by the called party information from the PBX in DTMF format. The Octel 250 answers and plays the appropriate greeting. Message-waiting indication is set and canceled using DTMF commands over the same pathway.

5.0 Configuring the Norstar to Integrate

Configuring the Norstar to integrate

Ensure that the Nortel Norstar VMI Installation Guide is on site and available. It is also strongly recommended that a qualified Norstar installer be present during installation.

There are several steps to correctly installing and configuring the VMI and Norstar. These steps include:

Determine the feature codes for the VMI.

Determine the intercom numbers assigned to the VMI ports.

Configure the Norstar lines connected to the VMI.

Determine the translation codes which will be used by the Octel 250 to perform integration functions.

Program the VMI.

When VMI is installed correctly (reference installation guide), a feature code and intercom number (DN) is automatically assigned to each unit.

To determine the VMI feature codes, enter the following from the telephone set:

Two intercom lines are assigned with one intercom line assigned as the prime line. Answer Keys cannot be assigned to the VMI.

When VMI is connected on Centrex, ensure each telephone port is configured so that:

HINT:When you have more than one VMI, and you have completed configuring the first unit, use the Line Access Copy and Set Copy features to apply parameters to additional units.

To ensure incoming calls are answered, you must assign Call Forward No Answer (CFNA) for all VMI ports. Assign the first VMI DN to CFNA to the second DN. Assign the second VMI DN to CFNA to the third DN, and so on to the last VMI DN, which is forwarded to the first DN.

Assign Call Forward Busy (CFB) for all sets to the VMI DN. Incoming calls ring at the VMI DN. Assign the first VMI DN to CFB to the second DN. Assign the second VMI DN to CFB to the third DN, and so on to the last VMI DN, which is forwarded to the first DN.

NOTE: Call Forward Busy cannot be assigned when VMI is connected to Norstar Compact DR2 or Modular DR2.

It is necessary to determine the translation code for each VMI. These translation codes are used by the Octel 250 to effect caller transfer and message notification. The VMI is preprogrammed with the following default codes:

The Send Message code is Link * (Code used by Octel to notify subscribers of new messages in their mailbox).

The Cancel Message code is Link # 1
(Code used by Octel to cancel message waiting).

The Transfer Message code is Link * 70
(Code used by Octel to transfer a call).

NOTES:

This code is for unsupervised transfer. Supervised transfers from the Octel voice module are not supported.

In Octel’s language, “L” (link) is the same as “F” (flash). If for some reason these default codes cannot be used, refer to the programming section of the VMI installation guide to make the necessary changes. Verify these codes with the PBX vendor.

6.0 Configuring THE Octel 250

Note: Message waiting should be allowed only for subscribers with valid extensions on the PBX configured to allow a message waiting indicator.

7.0Installing the voice Lines

Installing the voice lines

Each FLT board supports 8 analog station appearances. Each voice port connects to the PBX via an 25 pair male amphenol cable. Connect one 25 pair cable from the MDF to each FLT board in the Octel 250. See Figure 1 below for the cable pin-out.

7.1Testing the Installation

Steps to test the installation when completed

Create two mailboxes associated with two test extensions. Record a name and personal greeting for each mailbox.

Forward the test extensions to the Octel 250 access number.

Using one test extension, call the other test extension. You should hear the personal greeting.

Leave a message. Verify that the message-waiting indicator turns on.

Verify that return-to-operator works properly.

Call the Octel 250 from a test extension. You should immediately hear the generic greeting. Enter “#”, followed by the test mailbox number. Enter the test mailbox password.

Review the message in the mailbox.

Delete the message. Verify that the message-waiting indicator turns off.

8.0 Considerations

Important notes regarding this integration

8.1Call Forward Busy is not available when VMI is connected to Norstar Compact DR2 or Modular DR2.

8.2Supervised transfers from the voice module are not supported.

8.3The automatic reply to internal telephone-answering messages feature is not supported.

8.4The direct call feature is not supported.

8.5Double-call forwarding to personal greeting is not supported.

8.6Only one port can be set for Message Waiting Indication. The same port which activates message must also deactivate message waiting. It is also highly recommended to dedicate that port to message waiting only. If the message waiting port is also being used for other functions such as incoming calls, possible message waiting delays could occur.

8.7 When a Norstar system integrated with an Octel 250 is upgraded, certain software anomalies may affect the VMI/ATA interface. Indications are as follows:
1) A forwarded call to Octel will produce two calls ringing at the system (one is a phantom call).
2) Double DTMF digits will be delivered to Octel (i.e., ext. 234 forward to Octel, the Octel receives the digits 223344).
The only known solution for this is to re-initialize the Norstar system. Norstar Manager cannot be used to reload software as any backup will contain these anomalies as well. It is recommended that a hard copy printout of all Norstar programming be done prior to a software upgrade on the Norstar. In the event that the Norstar must be re-initialized the hardcopy printout can be used to re-enter the Norstar database. Nortel is aware of this problem.

8.8 T-1 capability is available on the Norstar ICS. This does not affect integration characteristics with the Octel system.
