Text: Hedgehog is Hungry PM Level: 3

High Frequency Word Review / the, up, is, asleep

Easy Reading

/ Use the last book from the previous session.
·  Help students to work out unknown words from meaning: “What would make sense there? What would look right and sound right?”
·  Get students to check any errors: “Did that make sense?” “You said ______. Does that look right?” “Can we say it that way?”
·  Get students to reread parts for fluency and phrasing.

New book

/ Orientation: GIVE A STRONG BOOK ORIENTATION AT THIS LEVEL: TELL THEM THE STORY
·  The name of this book is called “Hedgehog is Hungry.” Put your finger under the title and say it with me –“Hedgehog is Hungry.” The title or the name of the book tells us what the book is going to be about. On the front cover there’s a hedgehog: what kind of hedgehog do you think he is? Have a look at the hedgehog: we don’t have them in Australia, they have sharp spines and they eat insects and bugs. This is a book about a hungry hedgehog and all the things he eats. In the first part of the book it is winter and the hedgehog is asleep. Then the spring comes and the hedgehog wakes up. He comes out and goes looking for food because he is hungry. Then he finds a snail. But he is still hungry, so he finds a worm, then a caterpillar. Then he finds a beetle and a slug. He does this because after such a long sleep through the whole of winter hedgehog is hungry in the spring.
·  Walk through / talk through book: look at illustrations and discuss what is happening. Introduce new words by framing them with fingers from both hands: Here, here, hungry, spring, wakes, winter, Hedgehog, comes
·  Prompt students to use strategies.
·  Students read the book out loud but quietly!
·  Reinforce where students used strategies: “You said ______, and then you fixed it up. How did you know it was ______?” “You listened to yourself read, knew that it didn’t make sense and you went back and fixed it up: you made it make sense, look right and sound right.”
·  Encourage students to go back and self correct where they haven’t.
·  Practice fluency on one section: p 13
New high frequency words / Here, here, hungry, spring, wakes, winter, Hedgehog, comes
Letter identification / Focus on initial letter “h”: hedgehog. Brainstorm other words that start with h and then do an environment walk to look for words that start with h. Show them how to write h: practise in air, in rice trays and on the whiteboard. Find again in text.
Phonological awareness / ·  ing: spring, wing, bring, ring, king,
·  up: up, cup, pup
Other teaching focus / ·  Left to right directionality, where do I start to read, return sweep, counting the words on the page, find me a letter / find me a word.
