The Pigman and Me: Critical Analysis Lesson Plan
Federal Hocking Middle School
Name of Lesson: Creating the Scene
Time: 60-80 minutes + outside class time
Materials:
- Shoe boxes, cardboard squares, on something to build a 3-D setting on
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Markers/colored pencils/crayons
Objectives:
1. Upon completion of the lesson, students will be able to identify the main setting in the book, re-create the setting, and identify how the author gave the reader this image.
Lesson Procedure:
1. Once students have completed the book they need to examine the setting in the book.
2. On a piece of notebook paper students need to sketch out the main setting, which could be the town of Travis with Paul’s house, or just the house and yard.
3. Remind students to use the book to refresh the details in their mind. In one place the author actually creates a map to help the readers understand the setting.
4. Once students have the sketch of the setting, they will create a 3-D replica of the setting. Any actual setting components that they have they can glue down, and what they do not have they need to create.
5. Once students have built the setting they will return to their original sketch and circle the five most important parts of the setting.
6. On a separate piece of paper students will identify the five important parts to the setting and explain how the author described it in the book, which led to their building of the actual setting.
7. Students should have a paragraph for each of the 5 parts, which includes why it is important, how the author describes it, and what the author did to help the reader visualize this aspect of the setting.
8. Students will present their projects taking time to discuss the 5 elements of the setting and how the author described each.
Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed on their actual re-creation of the setting, the identification of five important aspects, their analysis paragraphs, and their oral presentation.
