Student Handbook

2011 – 2012

Dear Students,

Welcome to another school year at El Dorado High School. Our hope is that this handbook will be a resourceful guide that you will be able to use throughout the school year. We have compiled information that we feel is important for you and your parents to know. One of the most noticeable changes in this handbook is the fact that we have provided the various bell schedules that we may use throughout the year. We realize that something simple like changing a bell schedule, for whatever reason, can cause some stress, so we want to provide as much information as possible in this handbook to alleviate any anxiety that students may have.

Please review this handbook with your parents. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the administration. We look forward to a great year for the Aztecs of El Dorado High School, the Home of Champions and Scholars.

Respectfully,

Nora Paugh

Purpose

The purpose of the El Dorado High School student handbook is to make you aware of the policies and procedures that must be adhered to in order to provide a safe and enriching educational program.

Mission Statement

El Dorado High School will promote for all of its students the development of academic, career, and personal/social growth through a partnership with teachers, parents, and the community.

Student Responsibility

Students at El Dorado High School are expected to:

  1. Arrive to class on time
  2. Be prepared for each class with appropriate materials and assignment.
  3. Be aware of all the rules, the regulations, and the standards for student behavior as stated in the Student Code of Conduct and EDHS Student Handbook.
  4. Respect other individuals and property.
  5. Assist the school staff in operating a safe school.
  6. Help keep our campus clean by throwing your trash in the proper containers or trash cans.

ID Cards

All students are issued a picture I.D. card. Only senior students will receive a new one at registration. Students are expected to have it at all times while at school and at any school functions. There is no charge for this card. The card is property of El Dorado H.S. and if the card is damaged or lost there is a $5.00 replacement charge.

Textbooks

State-approved textbooks are provided to students free of charge for each subject or class. Books must be covered and treated with care. A student who is issued a damaged book should report the damage to the teacher. Students are responsible for all books that are checked out to them. Any student failing to return a book issued by the school loses the right to free textbooks until the book is returned or paid for by the parent; however, the student will be provided textbooks for use at school during the school day.

Deliveries to Students

Instruction is an essential part of a student's day and deliveries to the classroom disrupt this necessary instruction. Plan appropriately; there will be No deliveries of any kind accepted.

Lunchtime

El Dorado is a semi-open campus. Sophomore and Junior students will be allowed to leave campus during their lunch period by means of walking only. Senior students in good standing will be allowed to drive off campus during lunch. If these seniors are found to have sophomores or juniors in their vehicle while leaving campus and/or return late from the lunch period then driving privileges for off campus lunch will be revoked.

Parking

Students can park on campus with the purchase of a parking sticker. Parking stickers are $5.00 and students must have a valid driver’s license, current registration, and insurance card with student’s name on insurance. Vehicles parked on campus without the proper parking sticker are subject to being booted, cited or towed. There is a $35.00 charge for boot removal. All vehicles on campus are subject to search. Student parking will be limited to the parking lot on Edgemere by the theatre. Gates will be locked at

8:15 am for safety and security reasons.

Seniors can purchase a reserved parking space for $35.00 and have it painted to their liking (School colors). Seniors that have passed TAKS will receive a $10.00 discount with the presentation of scores. Please come to room D105 or see a student council officer for reserved parking.

Transportation

Buses are available for all students who live two miles or more from school. The activity bus will also be available for those students involved in extracurricular activities after school. Students are expected to show identification (ID) cards prior to entering the bus. Students must behave appropriately while on the bus. Discipline problems will be referred to the appropriate administrator.

Education Code Section 4.34 –Disruption of Transportation: States that any person who intentionally disrupts, prevents or interferes with the lawful transportation of children to and from school activities sponsored by a school on a vehicle owned and/or operated by a county or independent school district; shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $500.00

Final Exams

All students will take a final exam at the end of every nine week grading period. If a student misses their final exam as a result of an excused absence, the student will be allowed to make up the test during the following intersession in accordance with district policy. An exam schedule will be set at the end of every grading period. No students will be allowed to test before their scheduled exam time.

Campus News/Parent Newsletter

Campus activities will be posted on the school website. A Parent Newsletter will be posted on the campus website every nine weeks. This is the means by which information will be sent to parents to include a schedule of upcoming activities and other pertinent school information.

Lost and Found

All lost and found items will be kept by the campus monitor located by the administration office counter top.

Visitors

A visitor is defined as one who is not a member of the student body of El Dorado High School or an employee of SISD. All visitors must report to the receptionist’s desk in order to receive a visitor’s pass. Visitors will be asked to show identification when signing in at the campus. No student guests are allowed.

Change of Address

Anytime a student has a change of address, phone number, or any other pertinent information, they must notify the registrar in the front office. For a change of address, bring a utility bill for verification.
