What: Learn, limb up, mulch, beautify, remove English ivy, privet and have fun doing it.

Where work: Mulch a few trees on South Converse Street, and beautify the corner of ______.

Why: Improve the health of the trees, beautify the corner

How: Inside education by an expert and then fun outside caring for trees

Meet: Mrs. J. Ruth Littlejohn’s home at ______Avenue

Park: At the Littlejohns’ home. Walk to work.

When: Saturday, March 2nd Rain Date: March 9th Start time: 9:00 am sharp

Quit time: 11:00 am sharp. “Quit before you want to quit.”

Critique and social time: 11:01 to 11:30 am, coffee, drinks, snacks at the Littlejohns’ home

Bring: work shoes, gloves, hand clippers, loppers, hand pruning saws, etc.

Advance work: location selected by South Converse Neighborhood Association

Safety: Think through what might go wrong and cause an injury – Newt Hardie, Trees Coalition

Education: Mulching, pruning techniques – Kevin Parris, Certified arborist, Spartanburg Community College

Outside Fun: hands on education

Mulching (South Converse Street)

English ivy removal, privet removal

Pruning: three cuts for limbs thicker than 1”. All cuts circles, no ovals.

Cheerleaders (those feeling puny or not up to physical activity)

Afterwards: at 11:01, walk back to Littlejohns’ home. Coffee, drinks, snacks and fellowship. Celebrate and debrief. Evaluate the activity: fill out survey about what worked, what could be better. Handout re: invasives.
