Inspiration Series: D.A. Powell

D.A.Powell is a visiting professor of poetry at the Iowa Writers' Workshopwith five published collections under his belt, one of which received the National Book Critics Circle Award for 2013. Powell will open by reading selections from his work; after that, he will discuss his life thus far both personally and artistically, andanswer your questionsabout poetry, art, academia, and anything else you think to ask about.

Moby Dick Marathon PublicReading

In conjunction with the Iowa City Book Festival, the English Society is holding public reading of Herman Melville'sMoby Dick. Individual readers sign up for 20-minute slots over the course of three days; takentogether, participants will read the entirety of the novel over three days. Slots are still available! Juvenilia Reading

Wednesday, Oct. 18 @7PM (EPB 304)

Come to304 EPB at 7pmwith a piece (or multiple pieces) written by yourself in an earlier phase of your life. It can be a story from elementary school, a free verse poem from your angsty teenage years, etc. We will share them aloud in celebration of our previous artistic triumphs--or otherwise in celebration of our progress as artists. (Don't by shy; it'll be fun!)

Inspiration Series: Loren Glass

Currently researching the history of the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop and International Writing Program,Professor Loren Glass will be joining us for another Inspiration Series event. Many of you will know Professor Glass as your instructor for Foundations of the English Major, which he is currently teaching. This is your chance to meet discussion of life, work, teacherly wisdom, etc.

Nosferatu Screening

We're celebrating All Hallows' Eve with a free screening of the horror classicNosferatu(1922), starring Max Schreck and directed by F.W. Murnau. (The film is a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker'sDracula.) It will be introduced by one or two short films of the silent era, and by a brief introductory lecture from a faculty member.

Fall Writing Contest: Escape

In many ways, our lives and choices form a series of escapes. We escape our hometowns, our childhoods, and our mistakes; not always so differently from how we’d escape pursuers.As we make our collective escape from summertime, think about your own take on “escape” - exhilarating or terrifying, triumphant or bittersweet – and tell us in essay, story, poetry, drama, etc.! 1st place will receive a$25 gift card to Prairie Lights, and the two runners-up will each receive a$20 gift card.
