Post: LEARNING ASSISTANT

Responsible to: CURRICULUM (STRAND) LEADER

RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

·  To complement the professional work of teachers by taking responsibility for agreed learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. This may involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals/groups of students and assessing, recording and reporting on students’ achievement, progress and development.

·  You are required to carry out your duties in line with the School Mission Statement and the Learning Together for Success document.

Strategic Direction and Development:

·  contribute to the development of the Academy through meetings, professional development and work with other staff;

·  contribute to the identification, implementation and achievement of the school’s targets and priorities;

·  liaise with teaching staff to ensure the provision of relevant resources to support the curriculum;

·  promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom;

Supporting Teaching and Learning:

·  Assess the needs of students and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support students’ learning;

·  provide support to teachers in lesson planning, evaluating and modifying lessons in order to meet all students’ needs;

·  contribute to the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for mentees;

·  promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance;

·  construct and/or modify simple teaching aids and resources;

·  deliver learning activities to students within agreed system of supervision, adjusting activities according to student responses/needs;

·  deliver intervention strategies designed to raise student achievement;

·  assess the needs of students and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support students’ learning;

·  establish productive working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectations;

·  support students consistently whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs;

·  challenge and motivate students, promote and reinforce self esteem;

·  support students’ access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources;

·  organise and manage appropriate learning environment and resources;

·  monitor and evaluate student responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against pre-determined learning objectives;

·  provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required on student achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence;

·  record progress and achievement in lessons/activities systematically and provide feedback to students in relation to progress and achievement;

·  work within the school’s discipline for learning policy to anticipate and manage behaviour constructively, promoting self-control and independence;

Professional Development and Working With Others:

·  take responsibility for your own professional development and duties in relation to Academy policies and practices;

·  establish effective working relationships and act as a role model through your presentation and personal and professional conduct;

Use Resources:

·  create a stimulating learning environment for teaching and learning;

·  work with new innovations including ICT applications;

·  be aware of and respond appropriately to any health and safety issues.

Mentoring:

·  work with individual students to establish goals and aspirations;

·  monitor progress of students and initiate intervention strategies as appropriate;

·  communicate effectively with home;

·  monitor behaviour, attendance and punctuality;

·  review and act upon reports written on each student.
