COURSE
DESCRIPTION / This course is designed to present a variety of scientific concepts in the field of Chemistry. The course is very mathematically orientated, and will use a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach. It will integrate classroom presentations with hands-on laboratory activities.

GRADES / Course grades are determined by the total points a student earns on all assigned work within a weighted category.Categories and their percent weight are as follows:
HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK / 15%
LABORATORY TECHNIQUE and CLASS PARTICIPATION / 5%
LAB REPORTS/LAB QUIZZES / 15%

Homework/Classwork: Homework will be assigned every night, and will be due the following day unless otherwise stated. Some assignments completed during class will be collected and graded; classwork to be collected may be announced or unannounced.There will be at least one quiz per week on the homework and classwork.
If you earn a 95% or above in this category, your lowest test score will be dropped from your grade.
Labs: Points will be given for both participation/performance of the lab as well as for lab reports. The format of lab reports will vary according to lab activity. For some labs, quizzes may be given the day of the lab or the following day in substitution of a formal lab report.
Tests/Quizzes:Scheduled during class periods, quizzes and tests will cover reading material and material presented during lectures and discussions. A variety of question formats will be used. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.
Subterm Final: Cumulative test given at the end of each subterm.
The Final Grade will be based on the following percentages:
98-100% = A+ 73-77% = C
93-97% = A 70-72% = C-
90-92% = A- 68-69 % = D+
88-89% = B+ 63-67% = D
83-87% = B 60-62% = D-
80-82% = B- 59% and below = F / no credit
78-79% = C+
ATTENDANCE & MAKE-UP WORK / Absences:In the event of an absence, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and arrange to make it up. See class website for agenda. There will be specific days when labs, tests & quizzes can be made up at lunch or after school. All other work must be made up within a period of time equal to the number of days missed. Check the file cabinet in the back of the room for missed work; folders are organized by date.
Late Work: All late work must be submitted by the end of each unit, and will receive a maximum of 50% credit. You will have three Late Passes for the semester- you may use these at your discretion for full credit on any homework/classwork assignment
Tardies: The school policy on tardies will be followed.
Unexcused Absences: The school policy for unexcused absences will be followed.
EXPECTATIONS / 1) Courteous, responsible behavior is expected at all times.
2) Students are expected to remain respectful in their actions, language and gestures.
3) Desks, chairs, counter tops, and work areas should be kept clean.
4) Dismissal from class is at the teacher’s discretion, not at the bell. Your seating area and lab area must be clean prior to dismissal.
5) Follow lab safety rules at all times.
6) When the bell rings you should be in your seat working on the warm-up, with your homework and homework stamp sheet out on your desk.

CHEMISTRY LATE WORK PASSES

These are your three late passes for the semester. Each pass may be used for one late homework or classwork assignment. When you use a late pass I will date and initial the appropriate box below and note it in Q.
