DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE APPROVAL
FORM #1 (continued)
Please describe the intended elements of this course. The purpose is to provide the basic conceptual framework for this course. After course development is underway, further details will need to be provided in FORM # 2 of the CAS approval process.
Reason(s) for offering this course as a distance learning course -- NSCC is developing a set of four online accounting courses whose intended audience consists of those preparing to sit for the CPA Examination. In 2000 the State of Washington Board of Accountancy increased the number of college credits required to sit for the CPA Examination to 150 semester credit hours. At that time the Board also instituted a requirement that some of the accounting coursework had to be taken at a four year institution. In January 2005 the State Board of Accountancy revised the latter requirement to permit CPA candidates who were college graduates to complete all CPA educational coursework at a community college. In view of this change, we are developing the following online accounting courses:
Intermediate I
Intermediate II
Auditing
Cost Accounting
We believe that the online modality will appeal to those candidates who already have four year degrees and are presently employed in business or accounting. By offering these courses in an online modality we will attract those working college graduates who are unable to complete their education on campus.
Over the past several months we have been receiving approximately three requests per week from prospective students inquiring about upper level accounting courses and the CPA examination. Additionally, there is much evidence that hiring of CPA’s continues to be strong as companies and CPA firms strive to comply with the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley and other new legislation.
Course communications -- Similar to other accounting online courses, we intend to use Web CT including the discussion forum and the internal email system to facilitate communication. Additionally, we intend to offer lecture notes and other instructional material online to facilitate delivery of Intermediate Accounting II. Instructional material available on the text website includes PowerPoint slides, discussion pages on specific topics, and Excel templates. Homework will be submitted using Word and Excel.
Methods of assessment/evaluation -- Students will complete required homework, individual and group exercises, spreadsheet exercises and periodic quizzes. Students will also complete a mid-term and a final exam. A proctored final exam may be given at the instructor’s discretion.
Expectations of students --Assigned homework, quizzes, spreadsheet exercises, individual and group projects should be completed in a timely manner. Online interim examination(s) and a final examination will be completed. Students are expected to maintain a presence in the class by logging into the class website frequently and participating in the class discussion forum. Students are expected to promptly communicate concerns and problems to the instructor and to participate in an evaluation of the course.
Required technologies – All students will need a reliable Internet connection or access to on-campus computers.
Required materials – Textbook as specified by the instructor
Supplemental materials -- None
Required competencies – Basic Windows application abilities including Word and Excel skills are required. Email skills are also required.
Supplemental competencies -- None required
Plan for course development – All three of the developers have taught online classes previously. See attachment for the course development template which will be used to develop this course.
