Eugene City Water Polo 2016 - Overview

Eugene City Water Polo is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to growing the sport of water polo in the Eugene/Springfield area. ECWP has programs for boys and girls ages 10-18 that will help both new and experienced athletes maximize their potential. Sessions for high-school age athletes run February 23-May 16 and May 18-August 14, middle school program runs year-round. Practices are held at Echo Hollow Pool, Sheldon Pool, Amazon Pool, and Willamalane Pool. ECWP plays games and tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest. ECWP’s 18U boys team qualified for the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and the 16U boys team qualified in 2015. ECWP has plans to try to qualify additional age groups in 2016.

ECWP TEAMS:

18U Boys - Age 18 to 17 high school boys Girls - Age 18 to 15 high school girls

16U Boys - Age 16 to 15 high school boys 14U Coed- Age 14 to 10 boys and girls

Determining Athletes Age/Team:

Age is based on how old the athlete is on August 1st each year. (Example: If an athlete is 14 years old on August 1, 2016 they are eligible to compete in the 14U division. If an athlete turns 15 on July 31, 2016, his/her age is 15 on August 1st and is therefore no longer eligible for the 14U division. They are, however, able to participate in the 16U division.) There is one exception: Regardless of Age Eligibility requirement, athletes who are 19 years old and in their high school graduating class of the year in which JOs is held may still be allowed to participate in the 18U Division of National Junior Olympics.

*Attending Junior Olympics is dependent on team qualification at JO Qualifying Tournament.

Foster Lake:

One of the favorite events of ECWP athletes is the annual Nike Open Water Tournament at Foster Lake. This tournament takes place July 11-13, 2016 on Foster Lake outside of Sweet Home, Oregon. Teams participating this year are 16U boys 18U boys, and possibly High School girls. The athlete fee for this tournament is $75 (due May 1st) which includes camping, tournament t-shirt, mini-water polo camps, and meals. Athletes will camp on-site with coaches. Parents can camp nearby at Sunnyside County Park and make campground reservations through Kerrie at .

Junior Olympics:

There will be a Junior Olympics Parent and Athlete Meeting on Thu. March 10th 6:30pm at the Echo Hollow Pool Classroom. This is for the high school teams. Coach Cray will talk about commitments needed to participate including additional practices during the summer. Nikki Gray will discuss how athletes can work toward covering the cost of attending JOs. Players interested in participating in JOs need to make a deposit of $100 by April 1st to “ECWP.” Also, by April 15th they are required to do 3 things on usawaterpolo.org if they haven't already: 1) Upgrade to gold membership, 2) Verify their birth-date, 3) Select “ECWP” as their affiliated club.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:

We are a volunteer-run organization. For this reason, we require each family that participates to work a minimum of 10 hours over the course of the season. If an athlete is only participating in 1 session, then 5 hours are required. This requirement is per family and not per athlete. Hours can be completed by the athlete or family. Athletes who receive scholarships are required to work a minimum of 20 hours for the season (Spring + Summer) or 10 hours for one session. Any volunteer hours that have not been completed by July 31st of each year will be billed in August at a rate of $10 per hour. These hours can be fulfilled by helping with fundraising, working at our ECWP tournament, helping at Foster Lake, etc. Lisa Vertulfo will be tracking volunteer hours. She can be reached at .

UNIFORMS:

Uniforms are required and need to be ordered by Feb. 22nd. Cost is separate from club fees. (Men’s speedo $42, women’s swimsuit $68.) Suit designs are not changing from last year. No need to buy a new one this year, if the athlete’s suit from last year still fits. See order form for more details.
