TOPIC – CHANGING MATERIALS (SCIENCE)
Sand/ Water
· Ice shapes / Cubes / Margarine tub full of ice add salt / melt in water over week· Add washing up liquid / soap flakes make bubbles
· Make gunge and play with – discuss language
· Add water to sand – discuss differences
· Compare shapes made from wet/ dry sand
· Jelly in trays

Small World
· Mini beasts / polar bears / in soap flake slime ( Colour appropriately e.g. white for snow, black for mini-beasts / green)· Clean mud – Tissue paper, grated soap and water, make shapes and squash. Add small world toys, animals , people as appropriate
· Add different materials to trays e.g. sand, compost, bark and explore. Make a playground in bark/ sand /
Writing
· Sequence digital images and write captions, e.g. making jelly, melting chocolate· Simple recipe writing and instructions.
· Shopping lists
· Make recipe booklets, (staple, punch, stick pictures in …)
Outdoors
· Write on yard in water, use large paint brushes and buckets of water· Natural material hunt
· Looking at leaves at different times of year
· Snowmen (Weather Permitting!)
· Take water tray outside
· Washing, discuss textures feeling of fabrics at various points)
· Visit local bakery, pizzeria, restaurant, supermarkets etc. / Role Play
· Play with kitchen timers.
· Cooking / baking in home corner. Use a range of utensils, play food etc.

Creative
· Playdough / clay pots and shapes· Bubble pictures
· Printing with a variety of materials
· Mixing paint, powder to liquid
· Add sand sawdust, washing up liquid to paint and discuss textures
· Compare thick paint to water, explore on a slope, or in a picture
· Stretching, rolling, squashing, twisting, play dough, plasticine etc.
· Compare models made from different modelling materials, e.g. soft-fun compare to salt dough

· Hygiene when cooking· Safety when heating
· Do not touch ice straight out of a freezer /

· Food from a range of cultures· Be aware of children who cannot eat jelly from different cultures, use gelatine free
