Lesson 1: What is a superhero?

Objectives
WALT: Understand what a superhero is.

Success Criteria
Remember to:
·  Take turns to speak;
·  Listen to each other;
·  Have eye contact when speaking & listening. / Main Teaching
·  Write the word ‘super’ on IWB. Elicit a list of words that can have super as a prefix, for example: superman, superstar, supersonic and superhero. What does ‘super’ mean in relation to each of these words?
·  Highlight superhero; what do they think a superhero is? What do they look like? What do they do? Talk about the children’s perceptions of a hero, how do superheroes differ? Come up with a definition for a superhero together. E.g. A superhero is someone who uses their special powers to do good things. / Pupil Activities & Differentiation
In small groups, children to make a list of superheroes that they know of. What special powers do they have? How did they get their powers?
Plenary
Groups to feedback on the superheroes they know about. Does anyone have a favourite superhero? Why? What good qualities do they have? / Resources/Preparation
·  Prepare pictures of well-known superheroes as slide show, to support Plenary.

Lesson 2: If I was a superhero…
P.S.H.E: Circle Time
Objectives
WALT: identify real life problems.

As a circle time activity, encourage each of the children, in turn, to finish the sentence: ‘If I was a superhero I would…’ Pass a mask, cape, badge or wristband around as a superhero
speaking object. Encourage the children, in their responses, to think beyond themselves and their own individual needs to those of the wider community, for instance the class, school, neighbourhood or local town. Think about a problem that a superhero could help you to sort out – people dropping
litter on the streets, vandalism in the park, or bullying in school. What powers would a superhero need to have to defeat these problems?
Plenary: Make a list of identified problems to refer to later.
In small groups: give children various emergency missions to solve. Which super powers do they need? What equipment? How can they help?
Role play the scenarios.
Lesson 3-4: Superhero Scene

Objectives
WALT:
·  Create a picture, using ideas from drama;
·  Work collaboratively.
Vocabulary
Success Criteria
·  Use all the space on the paper – no white bits;
·  Plan background first & place cut outs on top – don’t glue until certain!;
·  Talk about the story with your group – decide what your picture should show. / Main Teaching
§  Explain activity. Model ideas on IWB, using Wood Woman & Axe Man and the setting of a forest. Talk about how groups could work on different parts of the story and then put panels together. / Pupil Activities & Differentiation
§  Mixed ability groups.
§  Use ideas from drama with superhero / villain cards to draw scenes from their story. Draw the background setting and insert cut out characters. Work in pairs and join panels together to create a larger scene. / Resources/Preparation

Lesson 5-6

Objectives
·  To create a new superhero;
·  To design the costume for their superhero.

Remember to:

1)  Share ‘School for Superheroes’ comic strip & discuss how the teachers and children have animal super powers. If they went to this school, what animal super powers would they like to have? Discuss other superhero powers previously looked at, e.g. the hero /villain cards. Give children time to complete their concept maps on their new superhero.
2)  Share PowerPoint on costume design & discuss how they could use some of the ideas for their own costumes.
