It is not just those on council that makes our activities successful, it is our council family and the participation of the membership. Pro-Life Committee (Bro. Mike Mroz):
Fr. Mark has decided against allowing a Baby Bottle Campaign this year because of the ongoing St. Bernadette Church Development Campaign. He doesn't want other fund raisers to conflict with the building campaign.
Priests for Life (Bro. Jack Stabile):
Bro. Jack was the first Pro-Life Chairman of the Council. At that time he got the Council involved in supporting the Priests for Life. The mission of Priests for Life is to unite and encourage all clergy to give special emphasis to the life issues in their ministry. It also seeks to help them take a more vocal and active role in the pro-life movement, with predominant emphasis on the issues of abortion and euthanasia.
Bro. Stabile has continued to receive mailings from the Priests for Life through the succeeding years. He brought to tonight’s meeting a recent letter from Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, requesting funds to be used to rouse our fellow Americans to get involved in this year’s pivotal elections and prevent those at all levels of government – federal, state and local – who are poised to take over positions of authority and seek to advance their agenda regarding the killing of the unborn, as well as their initiatives regarding the infirm, the aged and the disabled. A copy of the letter from Fr. Frank is attached to these minutes. (Also see New Business below.)
Relics of the Mexican Martyrs
Twenty five Mexicans martyred during the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico in the 1920s and '30s were canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000. Two additional Mexican Martyrs were beatified in 2005. The relics of six priests among those Mexican martyrs have been on a tour of the United States under the sponsorship of the Knights of Columbus. All six priests had been members of the Knights of Columbus. Relics have long been a part of Catholic devotional practice. Since the days of the Apostles, Christians have preserved and honored the physical remains of, and objects associated with, men and women recognized as saints. The North Carolina State Council of the Knights of Columbus has advised PGK Tim Hughes that a requilary containing the relics of the six martyred priestswill be here at St. Bernadette Church on Sunday July 20th between the 1:30 pm and 5:00 pm Masses. The State Council has asked for our Council and 4th Degree participation in the event. Bro. Jim O’Donnell will contact Fr. Mark regarding 4th Degree involvement.
