Panama, 22nd December 1879

Dear Mr. Sander,

Yesterday I received your four letters dated October 16th, 19th and 21st and November 1st. I had already closed my letter and when I took it to the post, it was already too late so that I had to take it back. Also my 6 crates did not depart; you may have heard of the storm in Colon which has disrupted the railway traffic.

We are going to Guatemala on the 29th. The two sacks of coconut fibre have not arrived, and will not arrive until the end of January because during December there is no freight shipping across the Isthmus.

You ask in your letter why I did not send more cirrhosum, but you will remember telling me that if the plants weren’t as big as my hat you wouldn’t want them. And they are not to be had.

Regarding shipments from Guatemala, I shall do my best. The white Lycaste is not certain and neither is the white Cattleya skinneri.

I shall send 1,000 Od. grandeand I shall look for Barkeria skinneri. I would very much like to go to Costa Rica because I want to send a good quantity of Anthurium scherzerianum to New York for I believe that is a plant that will go well in New York; if possible, please send a drawing by Young-Elliott.

Lehmann spoke to me about Cattleya dowiana and also about C. skinneri; in addition, there should be some trichopilias. Lehmann wants to dig up antiquities; I don’t know how he will fare with that. Also, he wants to go to Pasto to collect Masdevallia rosea, then via Tumaco to Panama; on the way he wants to collect Pescatorea lehmannii.Should these travel badly, I shall go there and send them packed in coconut fibre.

Where is Chesterton ?With this mail or with the next one I shall sell a money order to Mr. Lunau. You don’t write how the things sold.

I have enough time, I want to go to Chiriquí on the way to Costa Rica.

Dr. Reichenbach has told me many good things about Peru, and I would like to go to Ayabaca some time.

Due to the railway problems this consignment is doomed, I expect.

Adieu for today,

Eduard Klaboch

24th December

Today my 6 crates departed for Colon, also those of Lehmann’s. But they will have to wait until the 5th for the steamer from Lavanilla.

Lehmann wants to dig up antiquities near Quito; I don’t know how he will get away with that, because Buckley told me that he knows the things and that Lehmann needs a lot of good luck not to ruin himself in the process.

Yesterday, ‘Para’ arrived in Colon and I want to see if Lunau has received any letters for me, I expect one from Roezl.

Your letter dated 25th November has arrived containing drawings. Also one from uncle Roezl. The steamer is expected to depart for Guatemala on the 29th. Please send urgently pictures of Trichopilia crispa and Utricularia endresii, blue, I believe.

How did the latest macranthum travel ?

Today on the 26th I have a money order to Mr. Lunau for £100. I shall send this letter via New York.

With kind regards,

E. Klaboch
