A research essay/report is to be completed investigating an URBAN DYNAMIC in PYRMONT, an inner suburb of Sydney.

Urban dynamics refers to the processes that are taking place within a city that shape the landuse and organisation within a city. There are many urban dynamics operating. The most active urban dynamics are urban consolidation, urban renewal, urban sprawl and urban blight. You need t o decide which urban dynamic or dynamics are operating in Pyrmont and investigate what is happening, why it is happening and the results of that change on the local community (results can be positive and/or negative).

ESSAY or REPORT PRESENTATION:

You have a choice in how you wish to present this work. You can present your information in ONE of the following ways:

(a)as a formal essay – neatly written or typed in a folder (no dog ears or loose pages or torn pages)

(b)as a visual presentation to class ie. Powerpoint or similar computer program on a disc to be shown to class (you may need to check compatability and if necessary bring or borrow a laptop that is compatible)

(c) posters with both text, graphics, maps and images

ALL MATERIAL USED IN YOUR RESEARCH MUST BE REFERENCED AT THE END IN A BIBLIOGRAPHY.REGARDLESS OF WHICH PRESENTATION STYLE USED A FOLDER OF REFERENCES MUST BE SUBMITTED TOGETHER WITH AN APPENDIX (copies of three sources used)

When writing up or presenting your report the following headings may be used as a guide:

Introduction

–definition of urban dynamic that you have chosen and its role in the area studied

Location

-a map of Sydney showing the location of your study AND more detailed map of the suburb/local government area Pyrmont you are researching.

Body

-you need to examine in detail examples of how the area has changed over time in its landuse and reasons for these changes

-its impact on the local community and population eg.change in population structure, income, traffic, open space….etc.

-you must include photos, graphs, statistics

Conclusion

Bibliography (you MUST include at LEAST THREE SOURCES but can use more) – REMEMBER NO PLAGUAGISM.

Appendix (you must include copies of three of your sources in your appendix)

SUGGESTED SOURCES TO START WITH:

  1. Read your textbook on Urban dynamics in Sydney
  2. Community Profile from Australian Bureau of Statistics on Pyrmont
  3. SydneyHarbour Foreshore Authority
  4. Real Estate booklets, magazines, leaflets
  5. Your library – check out other geography text books….
  6. Go there and walk around – read the signs, catch Light Rail to PyrmontBay and walk around the foreshore, take photos
  7. DO NOT RELY WHOLY ON THE INTERNET – it can be slow and frustrating – use your library and other books as this is free!
  8. We will have a research lesson in the library and computers ….

Assessment Marks will be divided as follows:

5% Presentation – neatness, inventiveness, clarity, no crossing out, originality

10% Content – what you have found out from your research

5% Research process and materials used
