Shell Oil Company: Full-Time Petroleum Engineer

This job application packet is designed for applying for a full-time position as a petroleum engineer with Shell Oil Company. Shell Oil Company is the United States’ subsidiary of Royal-Dutch Shell. Shell is one of the largest oil companies in the world. In fact, Royal Dutch Shell is ranked second in CNN Money’s Global 500 behind Wal-Mart. The Global 500 is CNN Money’s annual ranking of the world’s largest corporations. Shell does not have a reserved business strategy. They take a lot moremany risks and are quicker on making make quick decisions than most other companies. Time is money, and they like to expedite the process by coming to business decisions quickly.

Human Resources will be in charge of handling all applicant’s resumes and cover letters. If HR sees something that they like, the applicant will receive an on-campus interview from a Shell employee. The employee then fills out the forms given as a guide for theforms for interviewguidelines, and then submits them back to HR. If HR is still impressed by the candidate, a site-visit and second interview is rewarded offered to the applicant. If, once again, HR is still impressed; an offer will be made to the applicant. The interview is successful, the company will submit a job offer.

Shell looks for many different qualities from their applicants. The applicants must be studying some form of petroleum engineering, and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. Other than that, Shell is looking for applicants who can work well in groups, has industry experience, is proficient with Microsoft Office and reservoir simulation software, and has experience working for a large corporation., and much more.

There are many aspects within my resume and cover letter that are tailored just for this Shell application. The first section listed in the resume is the qualifications summary. In my qualifications summary, I mention how I have experience in the oil industry and business operations. This shows that I am well-rounded and do not have a one-track mind. I also mention how I plan on pursuing a Masters in Business Administration, even though I am applying for an oil field job. Being an engineer with a Masters in Business Administration is highly respected and shows that you I have technical knowledge, but won’t make stupid poorbusiness decisions.

The next section in my resume is the education section. I decided to put this next because my degree and GPA requirement meet the qualifications needed for this position. I have placed that I attend Penn State first in the section because Penn State is the second best school in the US for reservoir engineering. I then have Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering listed next so it is easily spotted. After that I list my major GPA and beside it is my cumulative GPA. I list my major GPA first because it is a 3.94 and shows that I have extensive knowledge when it comes to petroleum engineering.

After the education section is my industry experience section. In this section I listed my oil field experience, however that I have that is not through an actual job/internship. I first listed the reservoir engineering part of the Capstone Design Project with Chevron Corporation. I listed this first because of how Penn State is second best in the US for reservoir engineering, and therefore we are normally recruited for thatcompanies regularly recruit graduates from this program. After that, I list the Drilling Engineering part of the Design Project, to show that I have experience in more than just reservoir engineering. Finally, I listed a job shadow that I did with Marathon Oil in Houston, Texas. This shows that I have seen how oil companies actually operate, and that I am willing to relocate. Relocation is very important in the Petroleum Industry; being that the majority of these companiesy’s headquarters are normally in Texas

Next, I have my professional experience section. This section includes my internship with Bayer. I included this on the resume because it shows that I have experience working for a large corporation, worked on important projects, and have business experience.

Finally, I have listed some academic achievements, technical skills, and personal information. In the academic achievements I show how I received a scholarship from Chevron Corporation (another oil company) and Edwin Drake (The man who drilled first oil well in PA.). In the technical skills section, I have listed programs that I am proficient with that are necessary for success in the oil industry. Finally, in the personal section I have listed how I was the head coach of Colt and Legion Baseball teams. This shows that I have leadership experience and can work well will groups of people.

My cover letter serves the purpose to expand on and explain many of the things listed in my resume. In my cover letter I also mention various classes that I have taken that apply directly to the job I am applying for. Finally, when speaking of my internship with Bayer in my cover letter, I focus on how it is important for engineers to understand and have experience in business to be successful.

Bayer MaterialScience: Polyurethane Product Management Intern

Bayer is a very large corporation based out of Germany. Bayer ranges in markets anywhere from pharmaceuticals to polyurethanes. Bayer MaterialScience is one of the many groups within Bayer. Bayer MaterialScience is a world leading producer of polymers and high-tech plastics. Their corporate culture is more reserved than most American companies. They spend much time weighing all options before making business decisions.

Human Resources will be in charge of handling all applicant’s resumes and cover letters. The applicants that impress HR will then receive a phone interview. If HR is still impressed after the phone interview, a site interview will take place. Only after that will an offer be made to the applicant.

Bayer MaterialScience will be looking for multiple qualities from their applicants. It is The job ad requiresd that the applicant be enrolled in a bachelors degree program with emphasis in business, engineering, or science. The also must have completed their sophomore year. It is also important that the applicant has experience with previous internships in a product management function, experience in SAP through an internship or coursework, proficiency with Microsoft Office software, and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

There are I tailored many aspects within my resume and cover letter that are tailored just for this Bayer MaterialScience application. The first section listed in my resume is my qualification summary. In this section I mention how I am studying Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and have a strong background in chemical engineering. Chemical engineering is a very beneficial background to have when dealing with polyurethanes. I also mention how I plan on pursuing a Masters in Business Administration. This looks good because it showshighlights that I am ambitious to continue my education and progress through the company.

The second section in my resume is my professional experience. This differs from my Shell Application where I had education second. My professional experience is very important in this application because I already did an internship in the position I am applying for. This is very important to highlight in the resume. Next, I have listed two other jobs I worked in carpentry and painting. These is can show that I am better at dealing with people and can handle problems as they arise. In any type of carpentry or painting there are always issues to overcome or even the occasional unhappy customer to deal with.

The next section in my resume is my education. In the education section I switched the order of Bachelor of Science and my degree of the Shell resume. It was important to show that I will acquire a B.S., and then show that I am going for engineering. Also, I switched the order of my major GPA and cumulative GPA from the Shell resume. It was more important to stress my cumulative GPA in this case because this is not an oil field job; where the major GPA is important.

Next is a section for other experience. In this section I included a summary of the Capstone Design Project with Chevron Corporation. This was included to show that I have also done work for another large company, and it also involves chemical engineering processes. These are both things that Bayer is looking for in their applicants.

Finally, I have listed some academic achievements, technical skills, and personal information. In the academic achievements section, I show how I received a scholarship from Chevron Corporation (another oil company) and Edwin Drake (drilled first oil well in PA). These are both achievements to be proud of. In the technical skills section, I have listed programs that I am proficient with in that are necessary for success in product management. The only difference between this and the Shell application is that SAP is listed first. This is because Bayer uses SAP and really wants their applicants to be proficient in it. Finally, in the personal section I have listed how I was the head coach of Colt and Legion Baseball teams. This shows that I have leadership experience and can work well will groups of people.

My cover letter serves the purpose to expand on and explain many of the things listed in my resume. In this cover letter I list my job experience before my education. The internship I did with Bayer is much more important than my degree in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. In my job experience section, I list and explain a couple of the most important projects I worked on while at Bayer. This is important because these are things that set me above the rest of the applicants. In my education section I focus on my chemical background rather than my petroleum background. This is because, as mentioned previously, chemical engineering is an important background to fully understand polyurethanes.

Dear Hiring Representative,

I am contacting you on behalf of an opportunity to obtain a full time position in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry with your company. With my problem solving skills, academic achievements, and leadership qualities, I feel that I am a strong candidate for this opportunity. I believe my qualifications will allow me to benefit and be an integral part of your company.

I am currently an eighth semester senior at The Pennsylvania State University studying Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. To this date I have completed studies in Applied Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Design and Production Engineering, Applied Reservoir Analysis and Secondary Recovery, and Reservoir modeling; to name a few that I feel have been important to my learning experience. Throughout these classes, I have learned the importance of reservoir engineering. Without proper reservoir engineering practices, optimal production will never be obtained. Throughout my studies at Penn State, I have been constantly improving in all aspects academically. The last two semesters I have achieved an overall G.P.A. of 3.84 and 3.88 GPA and expect nothing less for these upcoming semesters. This is reflected in my major GPA of 3.94. This hard work was recognized by Chevron Corporation and resulted in being awarded a scholarship from them last year; as well as the Edwin L. Drake Memorial Scholarship I received this year.

While working at Bayer MaterialScience as a Polyurethane Product Management Intern, I have gained valuable business and chemical engineering experience. Business operations are a very important aspect in the petroleum industry. Without an understanding of business and economics, an engineer can be costing the company more money than he is gaining makingfor them. Also, throughout my work with polyols and isocyanates, I was able to strengthen my chemical background and apply this to application with hydrocarbons. In my time at Bayer I learned how important business strategies and making smart economic decisions are to engineers. This is why I plan on pursuing a Masters in Business Administration. I feel this will shape me into a well-rounded engineer.

More information about my education and experience can be found in my enclosed resume. I can be contacted at any time at (412) 848-2157 or . Thank you for taking your time to review my resume and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Truly,

Dalton Worms
