JAMES HARDIE INNOVATION AWARD 2017 ENTRY FORM

The James Hardie ‘Innovation’ Award celebrates a new innovation that has the potential to lead to betterment of the construction industry and/or the built environment. The innovation could be a new product, a material, a technique, a design (or anything else) that will lead to the sector becoming more efficient, more sustainable, or provide a means for reducing cost.

ABOUT THE NZIOB AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Thank you for entering the 2017 NZIOB Awards for Excellence, the New Zealand building industry awards that acknowledge and celebrate the people behind the projects.

The NZIOB Awards for Excellence are unique in that they are the only New Zealand building industry national awards that recognise the individual. The awards celebrate an individuals’ professional excellence in the building and construction process, as opposed to recognising the completed project or structure.

The Awards are presented at an annual NZIOB Awards dinner, which is being held on Friday 25 August 2017 at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, this is also a great place to network with the best in the industry in a social environment.

The Awards are open to anyone in the New Zealand Construction or related industry, with entries judged by a panel of industry peers.

ENTRANT AND PROJECT ELIGIBILITY

  • NZIOB members and non-members can make nominations and entries.
  • Product or Projects designed/constructed within New Zealand during the 18-month period preceding the closing of entries on the 9th of May 2017. For clarity, a project must have been completed no earlier than the 9th of November 2015, and no later than the 9th of May 2017.
  • The projects must have reached practical completion and be in all other respects complete to the point of enabling a proper assessment by the Judging Panel.
  • The nominee must be the person or team whom has had total responsibility for the innovation.
  • The Judging Panel has the discretion to reallocate submissions into other categories.

JUDGING

A panel of three industry peers will judge your entry.

There are two stage of judging:

  • Preliminary judging: Assessment by Judging Panel, which may include phone calls to nominees/nominators/referees etc.
  • Finalists are then selected.
  • Finals judging: A face-to-face interview for all finalists.

JUDGINGCRITERIA

In terms of the overall judging criteria for the described innovation:

  • Originality.
  • Improvement in best practice.
  • Significant benefits or impacts on project / product or to the general industry.

Any conflicts of interest of any judge will be declared and an alternative judge may be appointed to the panel if necessary. Guest judges with a particular specialisation may be invited to judge. Judges are not obliged to make an award in this category if they feel there are no worthy entries. Please ensure you read the information at the end of this entry.

Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Degree of project difficulty.
  • Management methods and techniques.
  • Innovations developed to overcome difficulties.
  • Workforce organisation and training.
  • Innovative approaches in the construction process.
  • Relationship with the client, consultants, authorities, community and work force (employees, suppliers, subcontractors etc).

WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR? (consider these points in your answers)

This category celebrates the innovation involved in product / project design and implementation.

The judges will be looking for:

  • Entries that focus on solving customer and end user needs that result in excellent innovations.
  • Product or project which best demonstrates innovative approaches, solutions or products in its delivery.
  • A new technology, product or service; new to the market that will transform the way the industry will work.
  • Products / projects that support the end user in commercial settings e.g. construction, education, corporate, infrastructure, engineering, energy, technology design, architecture, admin, etc.
  • Products / projects that enhance building development and management through sustainability, maintenance, durability, productivity, occupant health, collaboration, space optimisation or energy efficiency.
  • Submissions can cover any innovation that relates to or impacts on the built environment.
    Examples include: product, process, technology, sustainability, health and safety, procurement,
    customer service that have improved upon or extended beyond current expectations of best practice
    in the chosen area.

  • False or misleading information has been intentionally provided.
