Richmond Firefighters Annual Marvin Griffin Memorial Golf Tournament Benefiting

Dear Friends,01/31/2017

For over 150 years, the Richmond Fire Department has faithfully served the Richmond community, at times risking our own lives for those we serve. In 1996, our brother, Fire Fighter Marvin Griffin died unexpectedly due to a line of duty death. Following his death, a memorial golf tournament was created in memory of Marvin to make an impact on the lives of children living in our community. Since its inception, tournament proceeds are donated to two local organizations that firefighters support from a national perspective.

Since 1955, MDA has built bridges and knocked down barriers for children living with neuromuscular diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp. MDA Camp is a magical place where year-round skills are developed and where a child with a disability can embark on a barrier free week of summer camp. Every child that attends camp will tell you that this is the best week of their year.

In addition to knowledgeable camp staff and medical personnel, all campers have his or her own one-on-one camp counselor, who helps with all aspects of both fun and personal care. There’s plenty of fun as camp provides a wide range of activities specially designed for individuals with limited mobility or those who use assistive devices or wheelchairs for mobility. Accessible activities range from outdoor sports such as swimming, boating, baseball, football and horseback riding, to less physically demanding programs like arts and crafts and talent shows.

The vision of the RFD Foundation is that every member will have the support of our fire family, comprised of both friends and co-workers for financial and emotional support in a time of need. We will always be open-minded and non-judgmental in our decisions while keeping an eye to the future. We will remain mindful of how we can best help others through their difficult times and challenges as we come together as a fire community and as a fire family within the Richmond Fire Department. Our long term vision remains focused on our first mission, helping fire family members during catastrophic injury, illness, or death while in the line of duty, while striving to improve our support network by offering more services such as counseling, disability help, and benevolence.

The Central Virginia Muscular Dystrophy Association and The RFD Foundationneed your support for our upcoming golf tournament. Please consider becoming a sponsor of this event or a contributor by donating raffle items, food and/or materials to help continue their missions.

We would like to thank those who have helped us in the past with your sponsorship and/or contributions to these worthy causes. We look forward to hearing from you again this year.
