Position: Africa/ Asia Programme Officer/ – Africa (APO)

Responsible to: Africa/ Asia Programme Manager – Africa (APM)

Start date: 1st November 2015

Salary: £14,000

1. Overview

  1. Background

Global One 2015 is a Muslim women-led international development NGO focused on building international leadership and sustainable development projects in the areas of Global Health, WASH, Agriculture and Livelihoods to help lift the impoverished and marginalised out of poverty.

We are recruiting an ambitious and driven Africa Programme Officer and an Asia Programme Manager, who will work with the Africa/Asia Programme Managersand in close collaboration with the field teams and partners in Africa and Asia. The post-holder will play a central role in the day to day project and operational support responsibilities. It will also give the role holder opportunities to support programme development.

The role will initially focus on supporting our programmes in Kenya and Nigeria (Africa) and Bangladesh (Asia). The line of responsibility will include assisting field teams with donor reporting and project management, desk level support to proposal development for institutional donors and effective internal coordination and communication between programmes team and the rest of the organisation.

The APO will be UK based although there maybe opportunities to travel to the country programme they support to provide reporting and project implementation operational support; subject to security considerations.

  1. Responsibilities

2.1 Donor reporting, and support to project management (40%)

  • Facilitating timely reporting with institutional donors, foundations and corporate donors in Kenya and Nigeria for Africa and Bangladesh in Asia, and supporting key project staff to effectively compile high-quality and impact oriented narrative and financial progress reports, following the GO guiding principles for good reporting
  • Maintaining an up to date understanding of institutional donor requirements and compliance
  • Support the development of project’s monitoring and evaluation frameworks with the Africa/AsiaProgramme Managers and ToRs for evaluations
  • Monitor project progress and facilitate learning, by tracking project progress against indicators – in close collaboration with the APM
  • Assisting with monitoring of programme finance (monthly or quarterly project expenditure against budget) in collaboration with Country Directors, the APM, Finance Manager

2.2 Support to Programme Development (30%)

  • Helping the APM and field team monitor institutional donor calls for proposals and funding cycles
  • Supporting the development of project concepts and full proposals in Global One’s thematic areas – Health, Agriculture, WASH and livelihoods, in collaboration with the APM, and field team (research background sections, drafting of proposals, assist with certifications, admin support etc.).
  • Supporting the APM with external programme relations, and advocacy

2.3 Utilising country programmes information for fundraising and publication needs (20%)

  • Ensuring effective internal communications between programmes team and the rest of the organisation – by providing content for GO’s Intranet system
  • Provide adequate information to support fundraising: information on projects’ progress and design, case studies, as well as preparing regular presentations on new projects and projects progress for internal and external communications.
  • Helping to ensure that GO publications are informed by programmes experience and evidence: information shared on projects’ progress in country offices, to support the preparation of papers and publications where needed with the APM.

2.4 Other (10%)

  • Making sure of the effective administration of the Africa/Asia desk requirements (filing, shared drive management)
  • Engaging with UK based working groups and networks (where appropriate)
  • Keeping up to date with the major issues and solutions pertaining to Global One’s areas of work
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duty and tasks that may from time to time be requested by the APM
  • Working with, supporting and at times managing the Africa/Asia programme interns

  • High-quality programme delivery and monitoring of projects

  1. Experience
  • Experience of working/volunteering in the international NGO sector
  • Experience in stakeholder management and working within teams
  • Experience of managing budgets and tracking expenditure
  • Experience of working with different cultures and contexts
  1. Knowledge and skills
  • Degree in International Development, Humanitarian Affairs, or other relevant fields
  • Best practice knowledge of sustainable development projects, and one more of Global One’s thematic areas (Global Health, WASH, Agriculture and Livelihoods)
  • Knowledge of the social and cultural context of Africa (East Africa and Nigeria) would be a plus
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Written and verbal English must be of the highest calibre (Essential)
