3.NF.2 Comparing Fractions on Number Line Sage and Scribe

Objective

Common Core3.NF.2: Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram

Specific/Student Friendly: Students will compare fractions by creating them on a number line.

Teacher Input

  1. Tell students they are going to compare fractions by working closely with a partner.
  2. Review circumstances how it is hard to compare fractions just by looking at the numbers, because as the denominators get higher the value of the fraction gets smaller.

3.Tell students they will compare fractions by making a number line on the iPad, using the structure Sage and Scribe. Note: Instead of using iPads students could use copies of lineswith intervals premarked by the teacher. The labeling of these lines, however, should be completed by students.

Guided Practice

  1. Model being the “Sage,” using the iPad Fraction Line App as a student acts as the “Sage.” Create 4/8 on the bottom number line and create ½ on the upper line. Have Scribe write an equation on the board showing they are equal.

Independent Practice

  1. Students complete “Number Line Fraction Comparisons” sheet, alternating who roles for each problem. Reiterate that the Scribe should write only when and what the Sage directs him/her to.

.

Check for Understanding

  1. Ensure that, when comparing, students are creating the correct representations on the iPad and cooperating and taking turns to complete the sheet.
