Instructions for completing the Pre-departure Study Abroad Credit Transfer Request Form
Important Information and Advice for Students and Pace Advisors
(1)A student must maintain the minimum equivalent of 12 U.S. credits each semester abroad to be considered a full-time student. The maximum number of credits permitted to transfer back is 18 per semester.
(2)Pace will award credits (but not grades) for each approved course taken abroad in which the student has earned a grade of “C” or higher. If the grade earned is “C-” or lower, Pace will not award any transfer credit for that course.
Instructions to the Student who plans to study abroad:
(1)Complete this form with your academic advisor in your home school/ college. Identify the courses you propose to take abroad. While you are only permitted to earn a maximum of 18 credits abroad during a single semester, it is advisable to list up to nine course options so as to have “back-up” choices preapproved should you not be able to schedule your 1st choices.
(2)Attach the course description, syllabus, or course outline for each of the proposed courses.
(3)Obtain the appropriate “approval signature” for each of the proposed courses that you have listed on the form. The “appropriate approval signature” for each category of course is as follows:
a)For Major Courses: your designated major advisor or advising office your school (e.g. Dyson, Lubin, Lienhard, Seidenberg, Education).
b)For Core, Minor, or Elective Courses: the General Advising office of your school
(4)Return this completed form to the Study Abroad Office. Be certain that you are given a copy of the completed form to take with you abroad.
(5)Once abroad, report any changes in your actual course registration to the Pace Study Abroad office immediately.
(6)Note: if you deviate from this pre-approved list of courses and take a different course, you will be responsible for obtaining the appropriate course approvalfor each new course with your faculty or school advisor.
(7)At the conclusion of your studies abroad, be sure to arrange to have your official transcript sent to the Pace Study Abroad Office.
Instructions for the College/ School Academic Advisors and for the Designated Advisors for each major:
(1)The school advisors should meet with the student to review the student’s program of study and identify appropriate courses (major, minor, core, and elective) that might be taken during study abroad so as to assure that the student makes normal progress toward completion of the Pace degree.
(2)The school advisors have authority to pre-approve proposed minor, elective, and core courses.
(3)In pre-approving each proposed core course, the school advisor should specify which AOK area it will satisfy. Other core courses that do not fit clearly into an AOK area can be checked as I&E (Inquiry and Exploration).
(4)The designated major advisor should determine if a proposed course will be accepted to count toward the student’s major. The major advisor should sign next to each pre-approved major course and indicate its closest Pace equivalent.
(5)In many cases, the course taken abroad will not have an identical match at Pace. With that in mind, when the school or major advisor identifies the “Pace equivalent” on the form, he/she should:
a)Use the Pace department and course number if there is a close match.
b)If the course abroad does not have a close Pace match, then the advisor should simply enter the department designation followed by “1XX, 2XX etc.” (e.g. History 1XX, Economics 2XX). Such courses will be transferred back to Pace as “History” or “Economics” transfer credit 100 or 200 level.
c)If the course abroad is worth more credits then the Pace equivalent, the advisor should use the additional “Count Toward” and “Pace equivalent” box to designate another equivalent for the additional credit(s).
