Please note. Check indicates that clinical agency accepts applications from students enrolled in associate degree programs and/or baccalaureate degree programs. Check in parentheses () indicates that clinical agency gives preference to students enrolled in baccalaureate degree programs and/or their own employees who are nursing students employed as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
- Some clinical facilities offer opportunities for students that are called “summer internships” or “summer intern” positions; other facilities may offer positions for nursing students that are “expanded” positions for certified nursing assistants. Please contact Human Resources at the clinical facility for more information about specific opportunities that may be available at that clinical facility for nursing students.
- According to the nurse practice act for the state of Minnesota, student nurses who are acting in the role of the RN (able to do assessments, insert catheters, give medications, and perform other skills that are beyond the scope of practice of a Certified Nursing Assistant) must be enrolled in a course in an accredited nursing program. Most summer internship programs provide students with a preceptored experience in which they are acting in this role of the RN. Thus, students need to take a course in the SON during their internship. MSU offers N497 for students who are accepted into internship programs. This course is a 1-credit online course that runs June 5 – August 11. Students register for the course when registration for summer sessions occurs. Patricia Young is the course instructor.
- The general dates for many of the internships for summer 2006 are June 5 - August 11.
- The deadline for submitting applications is December 16, 2005 unless noted. Please note that this information is what is currently available from clinical agencies and may be updated, so please contact Human Resources at the hospital that you are interested in for most current information and/or additional information about opportunities for summer internships. Thank you!
- Please check the specific application requirements for each hospital. Some hospitals require two references from nursing faculty; other hospitals require a specific faculty reference form that is included with their application materials. A generic reference form is included with these materials for your use.
- The MSUCareerDevelopmentCenter( is also a resource for information and assistance with completing applications (e.g., help with resumes, interviewing skills). Plan to attend the Nursing and Health-related Professions Career Day on Thursday, November 3, 2005 in the CSU ballroom where representatives of these agencies may be available to answer questions.
- Some out-of-state opportunities for summer internships are also available, please watch the bulletin boards in the SON hallway or outside 330 Wissink Hall for these postings.
- The Mayo clinic hospitals in Rochester are not a part of the state summer internship consortium group; there are information cards about Mayo’s summer internships on a poster outside Patricia Young’s office at 330 Wissink Hall. In addition, there are brochures for Rice Memorial hospital summer internships available in the box on the window sill outside 330 Wissink Hall. As other brochures are received, they will be placed in this box.
