CHANGES TO ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR EXISTING DEGREE PROGRAMS – APRIL 10, 2010

*Note: changes to admission requirementsmay require lead time of two calendar cycles for full implementation, depending on the nature of changes. Contact the Associate Registrar, Admission Services and the Coordinator, Undergraduate Curriculum to discuss proposed changes to admission requirements and required timelines.

PROPOSALS FOR NEW PROGRAMS/SPECIALIZATIONS

Note: All new degree programs and specializations (majors, minors, areas of concentration, areas of emphasis, certificates, articulation agreements) must receive a recommendation to move through the governance process from the AVPA. The AVPA ensures new programs are consistent with the strategic plans and directions for growth of the university. Information on the approval process is available online at
New program submissions cannot be forwarded to BUGS or Senate for approval until the AVPA has reviewed and approved the proposal.
Provide the following information and documentation with a new degree program or specialization proposal and submit with a cover memo of support from the Dean, Chair/Director and the Chair of the Program Committee.

  1. Program/Specialization Name and Administration: Indicate the Sponsoring Academic Unit(s) and College(s) and the offices responsible for academic counselling. Provide evidence of consultation with other units/programs participating in the proposed new program/specialization. (i.e. if the program of study includes courses from unit(s) other than the sponsoring unit, a clear commitment of support for the proposed program/specialization must be included. Proposals for new coop programs must also include a letter of support from the Director, Co-operative Education and Career Services
  1. Program Objectives and Rationale: What are the objectives of this program and how does it serve the undergraduate curriculum? What is the rationale for developing this new program? Why is there a need for it?
  1. Anticipated Enrolment and Impact: Indicate initial enrolment, after two years and anticipated steady state enrolment after the initial graduation of the first cohort. What is the expected impact on existing programs (i.e. will students move to this program from others or is this program expected to attract new students)?
  2. University Learning Objectives: How will this program enable students to achieve the University's learning objectives; which of the learning objectives are particularly addressed? See Chapter II, Learning Objectives, in the Undergraduate Calendar. New in 2010: Proposals for new Co-op Programs must address the proposed learning objectives for work term reports.
  3. Admission Requirements: For new degree programs, what are the requirements and what is the rationale. For new specializations, please indicate whether the admission requirements are the same as or differ from existing requirements within the degree program. If different, what is the rationale?
  4. Resources Summary: What are the resource implications of this program? How will the program be funded?
  5. Library resources and assessment: Library assessments are required as part of the initial review and governance process and are required in order for the proposal to be reviewed by BUGS. Consult Scott Gillies, Head of Information Resources ( or ext. 52945). The final assessment will be sent by the Library directly to the Coordinator, Undergraduate Curriculum.
  6. Calendar copy: Include the proposed calendar copy for this program (Preamble, Schedule of Studies and templates for any new courses proposed to support the program.

CHANGES TO EXISTING DEGREE PROGRAM OR SPECIALIZATION REGULATIONS

  1. Rationale: Why is this change necessary? Please indicate the reason for the changes.
  2. Impacton students currently enrolled: What impact will this change have on students already enrolled in the program? What steps will be necessary to phase in the change smoothly?
  3. Calendar copy: Please attach both the current and proposed calendar copy (indicate with track changes or use Form D, if necessary).

CHANGES TO ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR EXISTING DEGREE PROGRAMS

  1. Rationale: Why is the change being proposed? Include evidence of consultation with the Associate Registrar, Admission Services and any documentation or data to support the rationale for the change.
  2. Impact on applicants: What effect will the change have on the applicants to the program? Is the number of applicants likely to be affected?
  3. Advice to applicants: What recommendations, if any, will be given to students and high school guidance counselling offices beyond the basic admission requirements? Is this information to be placed in the calendar?
  4. Implementation: When should this change be implemented?
  5. Calendar copy: Please attach both the current and proposed calendar copy (indicate with track changes or use Form D, if necessary).
