Students: These are the job duties that you may be assigned during your Literature Circles “Book Buddies” club time. It is very important to always be prepared for your group discussions! Your group members count on you to be ready to discuss each job.
Discussion Director (DD):
Think of good questions to ask your group about the chapter you have just read. Write them down and be prepared to ask these questions with the rest of your book club. Please do not ask questions that will just have a one word, “yes” or “no” answer. So write a “fat” question…not a “skinny” question. These should be questions that your group can discuss.
Word Wizard (WW):
As you read the next chapter of your book, you play an important role as the word wizard. Pick five to ten words that interest you. You may not know what they mean. Use a dictionary to help find out the meaning of the word. Please write all of this information down and be prepared to share your findings with your group.
Passage Picker (PP):
Pick a passage and tell your group about it. It can be a part of the chapter that made you feel a certain way. Maybe it made you sad, happy, nervous, or scared to go on to another chapter. Be prepared to share with the rest of your book club. Write down the page number, the passage, and why you picked it.
Creative Connector (CC):
Your job is to read and find things in this chapter that connect what is going on in the story to something that is going on in your own life, around the world, or in another story you have read. Maybe something that is happening in the story reminds you of something that you already know about. Write down your thoughts and be prepared to share with the rest of your group.
Skillful Summarizer (SS):
Your job as you read the next chapter of your book is to report to the group what happened in the Beginning, Middle, and End of that chapter. Please write the main thing that happened in the Beginning, Middle and End of the chapter you read and be prepared to share with the rest of your group. Remember, the Summary is as easy as 1, 2, 3…it’s all about the B, M, E.
Awesome Artist (AA):
Yourjob will be to draw a picture of something you liked or disliked about the chapter you read. This can be a drawing on the main thing that happened in that chapter. It could also be a drawing of something that you imagined while reading. Be prepared to share your picture with your group. Always compliment every artist’s drawings, no matter what.
