FROM THE TEACHER

This week has been a very busy one for us. We are starting to get used to our new routine and have been doing great job learning and following the rules of our classroom. We have been able to go outside and play on our newly renovated playground this week. The students love all of the new equipment that was installed this summer.

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Open House on Tuesday night. It was nice to meet with you and share how Kindergarten and our classroom work.

Thank you to our Parapro, Mrs. Perry for bringing us lots of different kinds of fruit for snack today to help us celebrate the end of our colors unit.

TRANSPORTATION

Please mark transportation changes on the calendar in your child’s folder or send a note.

BREAKFAST

If there is a change and you wish your child to go and get breakfast on any given day you can mark it on their calendar. We are very hesitant to send your child to breakfast on their work if you marked on the form for us to only send your child to breakfast if you send a note.

HOMEWORK

We will not have homework until after we have completed our Zoophonics unit. Skills you can be working on are counting to 50, counting objects to 10, the letter name and sound for each letter of the alphabet.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

We are currently working on our Zoophonics unit. Zoophonics is an amazing program that teaches the children the letter sounds by using animals and motions. We have learned the sounds for the letters a – i in the past two weeks and will continue learning a letter a day until we reach z. When we complete our Zoophonics unit we will begin at the beginning of the alphabet and spend more time on each letter learning how to use the sound to decode words. Your child will be responsible for learning the 75 Dolch pre-primer and primer sight words this year. We have already begun to work on the first 4 words and will continue to work on the words all year. The word list was in your Open House packet and we start at the beginning and move through. Please ask for a new list if you misplace yours.

MATH:

We are working on our numbers 0 – 9 at present. The students will learn the number, the number word and how to count with one to one correspondence. We will continue to work on this unit next week. We also participate in number talks each day to help the students better understand how numbers work. We also started working in our math journals this week. We will use our journals to practice problem solving throughout the year. Students will need to be able to count to 50 by the end of this nine weeks. You can help by having them practice this skill at home.

INTEGRATED STUDIES: We have been working on our colors this past two weeks. The color words are a part of the student’s sight word list. Next week we will begin working on a unit about where we live. This unit includes a section on globes and maps. We will be looking at Earth, North America, United States and Georgia before looking at our hometowns. We will review this unit again in the Spring and students will be working to learn their home address at that time.

Have a great weekend
