School Overview

Mary MacKillop Primary School first opened in 1995, the year of Mary MacKillop's Beatification. Our school is one of three Catholic Primary Schools belonging to the Parish of Our Lady Help of Christians Narre Warren. We are closely linked to the Catholic regional secondary college St Francis Xavier Secondary College.

Our school is inspired by the charisms of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first Saint and co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph whose life was lived with great faith in God, whom she never doubted. Mary displayed courage and strength to stand up for what she believed was right and fair and never saw a need without doing something about it. Our School values of;

  • Be Courageous
  • Be Compassionate
  • Be a Problem Solver
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible

Emanate from the story of Mary’s life

The school has permanent, contemporary classrooms as well as large playing areas for the students which include a grassed oval, an all-weather multi-surfaced playing oval/running track, as well as a basketball court and a variety of playground equipment. Other indoor facilities include a hall, gymnasium, and multi-purpose complex. These areas are used for a range of school community events, Physical Education classes, Music lessons, Performing Arts and Incursions. We also have a Gym which it utilised for our Out of School Hours Care Program.

Our school is committed to developing a safe and supportive learning environment. We undertake to develop the whole child by nurturing a learning community that is growing together; where student’s staff and parents are engaged, empowered and encouraged to develop a love of learning. We strive to develop student’s cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual skills, to enable them to find God in all things and to allow them to live out their vocation in life according to the variety of their gifts.

We place particular importance on English and Mathematics development, and on our pastoral care processes to ensure the wellbeing of all. We aim to nurture quality relationships and value strong partnerships.

The wellbeing of all members of our community is of primary importance to staff and so we place great importance on our pastoral care processes. We have a strong, supportive parent community and strive to link our students and their families to their local community.

In 2013 we embraced the Catholic School Renewal Process. This process enabled us to reflect on the past and to plan for the future. Through Catholic School Renewal we have established a strategic plan, which supports us in:

  • Developing a Catholic learning culture, in word and action, based on a clear understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and our identified core Catholic values as espoused through the charism of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
  • Creating contemporary learning environments in which children are empowered, engaged and confident learners who think, reflect, make connections and take action.
  • Planning opportunities for personalised and small group learning, based on effective learning and teaching practice, which is guided and informed by student data.
  • Building a collaborative and empowered learning culture for our children, staff and parents.

Mary MacKillop Primary School is a great place to be. We are proud of our children, our school and our community. As a staff we are committed to improved spiritual, academic and social learning opportunities for all our children and families.
