Center Description

The Azusa Pacific UniversityCommunity Counseling Center (CCC) is a community-based counseling facility featuring a therapeutic staff that provides quality counseling and consulting services in a variety of locations throughout the east San GabrielValley. The clinicians at the community counseling centers provide a broad range of cutting edge treatment services for individuals, couples, and families including support for life transition dilemmas, crisis-related issues and disorders of depression and anxiety. Counseling and educational services are provided by licensed professionals, interns, and trainees, depending on client needs.

Center Hours:

The CCC is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 AM to 9PM, Fridays from 9AM to 6 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Social Work Training Objective

The focus of the internship at the CCC is to expose Master of Social Work student interns to foundation level social practice skills in a community-based setting.

Duration of Internship

Students complete internship over a nine-month period, from September through May. Students completing hours at a school site will be required to continue their internship until June. A minimum of 16 hours per week over two 15 week semesters is required for a total of 480 hours.

Description of Internship

  • Micro-level (direct practice) and Macro-level experience (50%/50%)
  • Direct Practice experience with individuals, families, and groups
  • Community partnering, outreach, and education
  • Opportunity to gain experience in a school-based setting
  • Phone screening/walk-in intakes

Description of Supervision Requirements

  • Students are required to complete all background checks and an internship orientation
  • A minimum of one-hour individual supervision per week with the assigned field instructor
  • Group supervision with field instructor and/or preceptor two times monthly
  • Attend weekly training seminars.
  • Completion of process recordings and video recordings

Intern Functions

  • Interns will provide individual, family, and group social work interventions. This may include case management, crisis intervention, and psychotherapy.
  • Students are expected to learn and maintain client charts.
  • Students are expected do be involved with various macro assignments related to community outreach and education.
    Students will facilitate groups, seminars, and/or presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrollment in a MSW program approved for internship placement

At least 12 units of coursework completed

Availability on two eight hour days, one weekday is a mandatory

Attend weekly training seminars on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Child/family experience is highly preferred

Must be self-motivated and able to work independently

Motivation to gain experience with micro and macro-level practice skills

Must be willing to work in a team setting

Good attendance and punctuality

Good interpersonal skills

Excellent verbal and written skills are required

Bilingual Spanish speaker is highly preferred

Internship Selection Process

Students must submit a student resume to the Executive Director. A pre-placement interview shall be scheduled. The selection process shall be completed once all intern candidates have been interviewed.
