Purpose of the New Role: The successful applicant will joina team of researchers at the University of Nottingham Brewing Research Centre investigating the generation of novel hybrid yeast strains and their phenotypic characteristics in relation to brewing fermentation performance. The project is funded by BBSRC in conjunction with SABMiller.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / To design protocols appropriate for analysis of brewing yeast phenotypes / 30%
2. / To successfully test hybrid yeast strains for fermentation related characteristics including tolerance to stress factors, flocculation potential and ethanol/flavour production / 30%
3. / To liaise effectively an proactively with the academic team and industrial partners to meet the project objectives and milestones / 10%
4. / To have day to day responsibility for the satisfactory progress of the research programme / 10%
5. / To generate written research reports and papers as appropriate / 10%
6. / Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate supervisors when required / 5%
7. / Other duties appropriate to the role / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / BSc
PhD or close to completion of PhD in yeast cell biology, fermentation, brewing science or a related discipline. / Publication record
Skills/Training / Good microbiological lab practice
Familiarity with a range of fermentation systems, including laboratory scale apparatus
Good communication skills
Presentation skills / Experience of molecular biology based techniques
Experience of yeast phenotyping / phenotype array analysis
Experience / Experience of working with yeast and fermentation / Experience of working within the brewing sector
